Nestled in the heart of Visakhapatnam, a remarkable green oasis thrives against all odds, showcasing the resilience and beauty of nature. This three-acre biodiversity park, located on the grounds of Rani Chandramani Devi (RCD) Government Hospital, is the inspiring creation of Dr. Mantha Ram Murthy, a marine biologist and former zoology professor. Driven by his love for nature, Dr. Murthy transformed what was once a neglected wasteland into a vibrant, ecological haven. Today, this park invites visitors of all ages to connect deeply with nature and embrace conservation.
Dr. Murthy and his wife, Mangathayi, founded the Dolphin Nature Conservation Society (DNCS) in 2001, which has since supported the park’s remarkable growth. Over the years, with the help of volunteers, students, and generous donors, the park has become home to over 2,000 plant species, 130 butterfly species, and 60 species of birds, including the beautiful Golden-backed Woodpecker, Spotted Owlet, and Purple Sunbird. Among its many features, the park boasts sacred groves, desert zones, ponds, a greenhouse, a cacti house, and a variety of dedicated zones featuring medicinal, ornamental, and aquatic plants.
The journey began with only 1,000 square feet, cleared by Dr. Murthy and his team, who removed garbage and enriched the soil. Seeds were sourced from across India, and cutting-edge conservation methods were employed to nurture endangered plant species. Today, the park proudly displays over 500 species of medicinal plants, 300 varieties of succulents, and unique flora like the Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba) and the Mickey Mouse Tree.
While the park has faced challenges, from financial constraints to the damage caused by Cyclone Hud Hud in 2014, Dr. Murthy’s dedication and the support of the community have ensured its resilience. Dr. Murthy has invested over Rs. 70,00,000, funded through his savings, community donations, and support from the district administration. However, the park still needs continued financial support to sustain and expand its efforts in conserving biodiversity.
Reflecting on the park’s significance, Dr. Murthy says, “The flora and fauna of this park exemplify what humanity must learn about life—our deep connection with nature.” His vision has transformed a once barren landscape into a thriving sanctuary that celebrates the richness of our natural world.
