Sports Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy announced that the state government is considering the introduction of a dedicated cricket team representing Andhra Pradesh in the IPL tournament. He mentioned plans to name the team after the city of Amaravati and emphasized efforts to elevate Andhra Pradesh into a prominent sports destination.
Following a meeting with the sports authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) at the IGMC stadium, Minister Ramprasad Reddy disclosed the government’s intentions to enhance sports infrastructure at all levels, from grassroots to state-level competitions, to nurture talented athletes. He raised concerns about alleged corruption amounting to 120 crore during the previous administration’s ‘Aadudam Andhra’ competitions, vowing to investigate and address any irregularities within SAAP.
The government aims to foster sports at various levels by constructing new sports facilities, stadiums, and infrastructure throughout the state. Minister Ramprasad Reddy highlighted the formation of a committee to investigate a certificate duplication scandal within SAAP and ensure fair opportunities for genuine athletes through job placements under the sports quota.
Furthermore, a new sports policy is on the horizon, with plans to collaborate with esteemed figures in the sports realm like Pullela Gopichand to establish sports academies in Visakhapatnam and Amaravati, enriching the sporting landscape of Andhra Pradesh.
