A female resident doctor from Government Medical College has reported being molested by an unidentified man while heading to her hostel after completing her shift at the nearby Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. The police announced on Wednesday that they have filed a complaint and are investigating the incident, which allegedly occurred late Monday evening.
The doctor, originally from Delhi, claimed that a man on a motorcycle approached her on the medical college premises near her hostel. According to her report, the man snatched her purse and touched her inappropriately before fleeing when she screamed for help.
In a related development, the family of the RG Kar Hospital rape case victim participated in a candlelight vigil at the hospital, demanding justice. Holding candles, they chanted “bichar chai” (we want justice). As a large part of the city experienced a power outage, protesters symbolically extinguished and relit their candles and lamps. A moment of silence was observed in memory of the victim, followed by revolutionary songs sung by her parents and supporters. The vigil, which began at 9 pm on Wednesday, saw residents joining from balconies and terraces with lit candles.
Protesters organized the vigil to counteract any attempts to obscure the gravity of the situation, with many voluntarily turning off their lights in solidarity, resulting in significant areas of the city being cloaked in darkness.
