In light of recent controversies, Home Minister V. Anitha conducted a detailed inspection of Visakhapatnam Central Jail on Sunday. The jail has been under scrutiny due to a series of incidents, including a protest by police constables, the discovery of contraband, and allegations of staff misconduct.

Key Issues at the Jail

The controversies at the jail began with:

  1. Police Constables’ Protest: Several constables staged a dharna against the Jail Superintendent, violating protocol by protesting in uniform.
  2. Discovery of Contraband: A mobile phone, batteries, and cables were recently found within the jail premises.
  3. Ganja-Related Incidents: A jail staff member was caught supplying ganja to inmates, and a small ganja plant was reportedly found on the premises.

Minister’s Assurances

Speaking to the media, Ms. Anitha assured that investigations are underway to determine how the contraband entered the jail and the purpose of the smuggled mobile phone. “Strict action will be taken against those found responsible for these security lapses,” she said.

Regarding the staff protest, she confirmed that the personnel involved were transferred, as participating in a protest in uniform is against the norms.

Enhanced Security Measures

The Home Minister announced several measures to strengthen security at the prison:

  • Installation of CCTV cameras to cover the entire jail campus within 10 days.
  • Live feeds from the cameras to be monitored at the Command Control Room or the Superintendent’s Office.
  • Use of advanced technology to reinforce security.
  • Increased deployment of security personnel.

Overcrowding Solutions

Ms. Anitha also addressed the issue of overcrowding at the jail. She revealed plans to shift around 200 prisoners from Visakhapatnam Central Jail to Rajahmundry Central Jail to alleviate the situation.

Response to Ganja Seizure

On the discovery of a ganja plant, the Minister clarified, “It is likely that inmates planted the sapling. Around 50% of the jail’s 1,075 inmates are ganja smugglers, including inter-State offenders. We are committed to preventing such incidents in the future.”

Government’s Commitment

Ms. Anitha reiterated the government’s dedication to maintaining law and order in the jail system. “We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the safety and security of prison operations,” she concluded.
