India Responds to Canadian Allegations: Calls Out Smear Campaigns Amid Diplomatic Strain

Tensions between India and Canada continue to escalate, with New Delhi issuing a strong rebuttal to recent allegations purportedly made by Canadian officials. Late Wednesday night, India dismissed claims published in Canadian media, calling them “ludicrous” and a deliberate attempt to fuel misinformation.

The Indian government stated, “We do not normally comment on media reports. However, such ludicrous statements made to a newspaper purportedly by a Canadian government source should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve. Smear campaigns like this only further damage our already strained ties.”

Background on the Diplomatic Rift

The strain began in September last year when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a claim India strongly denied as “absurd.” The situation worsened last month when Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner. India responded swiftly, expelling six Canadian diplomats in return, including the Canadian acting high commissioner and deputy high commissioner.

According to Indian authorities, Canada had initially communicated that Indian diplomats were “persons of interest” in the investigation into Nijjar’s death. New Delhi interpreted this as an attempt to politicize the issue and undermine India on an international stage.

India Protests Baseless Allegations

Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison reportedly alleged before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security in Ottawa that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah was involved in a campaign of violence and intimidation targeting Sikh separatists in Canada.

India has vehemently protested these claims, summoning the Canadian high commission’s representative and delivering a diplomatic note in response to the “absurd and baseless references.” The Indian government called the remarks “irresponsible” and warned of serious consequences for bilateral ties.

India’s Perspective on the Issue

New Delhi accused Canadian officials of intentionally leaking unfounded insinuations to international media as part of a broader strategy to discredit India. “Such actions only confirm the view that the current Canadian government’s political agenda is guided by bias and a lack of accountability,” India stated.

Consequences for Bilateral Relations

The ongoing diplomatic feud has further deteriorated ties between the two nations, which were already strained over disagreements on trade and Sikh separatist activities in Canada. Experts suggest that unless diplomatic channels open for constructive dialogue, the repercussions could extend beyond bilateral relations to impact multilateral partnerships involving both nations.

Conclusion

India has made it clear that it will not tolerate baseless allegations aimed at tarnishing its global reputation. As the diplomatic standoff continues, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes dialogue and mutual respect.
