Visakhapatnam’s skyline now boasts a new symbol of naval pride with the installation of the Indian Navy’s decommissioned UH-3H helicopter on RK Beach Road. Officially placed on Wednesday, the helicopter marks the first step toward the creation of a state-of-the-art aviation museum, set to complement the existing TU-142 Aircraft Museum.
The project, spearheaded by the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA), is estimated to cost ₹3 crore and is expected to be completed within three months. Speaking on the occasion, VMRDA Commissioner KS Viswanathan said, “This initiative will not only preserve the legacy of Indian Naval Aviation but also boost tourism and educate the public about our naval history.”
A Distinguished Service Legacy
The UH-3H helicopter, fondly named Saaras, retired from service during a de-induction ceremony at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, on June 28, 2024, after an illustrious 17-year career. Inducted in 2009 under the INAS 350 squadron, it served as a versatile asset in:
- Special Operations and Search-and-Rescue (SAR): Critical during natural disasters, saving countless lives.
- Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR): Delivering aid to remote and disaster-stricken areas.
- Offshore Security and Logistical Support: Strengthening maritime security and operational efficiency.
The UH-3H was originally brought to India in 2007 along with the INS Jalashwa and became a symbol of “Strength, Valour, and Perseverance,” as reflected in its squadron crest.
Honouring a Hero
The permanent display of the UH-3H helicopter pays homage to its contributions while serving as an inspiration for future generations. During the de-induction ceremony, the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command presented a commemorative plaque to the state government, symbolizing the helicopter’s rich legacy.
A Tourism Boost for Visakhapatnam
The aviation museum is poised to be a major attraction, offering an immersive experience into the history of Indian Naval Aviation. By showcasing aerial assets like the UH-3H, the museum will highlight the Navy’s crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime boundaries.
Visakhapatnam’s RK Beach Road, already renowned for its scenic beauty, is set to become an even more vibrant cultural and educational hub. The UH-3H display and the upcoming museum will not only celebrate naval accomplishments but also bolster the city’s tourism sector.
As the project progresses, the city looks forward to unveiling this tribute to the Saaras and the valiant sailors who have dedicated their lives to securing India’s seas.
