Lucknow, October 21: The Karva Chauth festival, a cherished tradition among women in northern India, took a dark and tragic turn in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh. On this day, women fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life and welfare of their husbands. However, in a chilling incident, a woman who observed the Karva Chauth fast ended up poisoning her husband on the very day she prayed for his well-being.

The Incident

The shocking event unfolded on Sunday, October 21, in the Kada Dham police station area of Kaushambi district. Shailesh Kumar (32) and his wife Savita participated in the Karva Chauth rituals with great devotion. Savita fasted the entire day, praying for her husband’s long life and performing the traditional puja. Shailesh, in turn, made all the necessary arrangements for her fast and prayers.

According to police reports, the couple had been experiencing tension in their marriage, stemming from suspicions of infidelity. Savita believed that her husband was involved in an extramarital affair, which eventually led to the deadly confrontation.

Poisoned Meal

After Savita broke her fast in the evening, the couple had a meal together. However, the peaceful celebration soon took a dark turn. Unbeknownst to Shailesh, Savita had laced his food with poison, driven by her suspicions of his infidelity. Shortly after their meal, Shailesh fell seriously ill and collapsed.

Suspecting foul play, Shailesh’s brother rushed him to the nearest hospital. While undergoing treatment, Shailesh revealed that his wife had poisoned him. His brother recorded the victim’s statement on his phone, a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation. Unfortunately, Shailesh passed away shortly after providing his testimony.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Upon receiving information about Shailesh’s death, the police launched an investigation. Authorities arrested Savita on charges of poisoning her husband, and a formal case has been registered. Shailesh’s body has been sent for postmortem, and further investigation is underway to uncover the full details of the crime.

Conclusion

The tragic incident in Kaushambi highlights the darker side of strained marital relationships, even on a day dedicated to love and devotion. While Karva Chauth is celebrated to strengthen the bond between husband and wife, this case serves as a stark reminder that unresolved suspicions and tension can lead to devastating consequences. As police continue to investigate, the community mourns the loss of life on what was supposed to be a day of celebration and togetherness.
