Since 2008, there has been a plan to designate Ratapani Wildlife as a Tiger Reserve.
Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located outside of Bhopal, has been approved by the Madhya Pradesh State Wildlife Board to become the state’s eighth tiger reserve.
A senior forest official stated on Monday that the recommendation of the state wildlife board will be forwarded to the Center for final permission to declare the wildlife sanctuary a tiger reserve.
“At its most recent meeting, the state wildlife board approved the declaration of Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) (wildlife) Subhranjan Sen informed this newspaper, “We have now received the board’s proposal.
For various reasons, the proposal to designate Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve has been on hold since 2008, according to sources.
2011 saw the notification of Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve, with approval in principle granted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
When it is declared, the Ratapani Tiger Reserve will be the nation’s first to be close to a state capital.
The procedure to designate the wildlife sanctuary as a tiger reserve will start as soon as the Center gives its approval, and it might take a another two months to finish. the procedure for designating it as a tiger reserve, according to sources.
There are currently seven other tiger reserves in existence: Bandhavgarh, Satpura, Kanha, Panna, Pench, Sanjay-Dubri, and Veerangana Durgavati.
According to the 2022 census, there are 3123 wild animals in the Ratapani wildlife sanctuary, 56 of which are tigers and 70 of which are leopards.
