The ongoing political showdown in Telangana between the Opposition BRS and Congress regarding the farmer loan waiver has escalated once more. The debate centers around the accusation by BRS that farmers are resorting to extreme measures like suicide due to the government’s failure to waive their loans. In response, Congress asserts that they are implementing policies inherited from the previous administration with regards to loan waivers.
Former minister Harish Rao castigated the Congress rule, labeling it a curse on farmers. CM Revanth Reddy alleged that farmers are being deceived, leading to a troubling spike in suicides, with 475 reported in the past 9 months. The government disclosed that only 20 lakh out of 41 lakh farmers have received loan waivers, prompting demands from Harish Rao for clarity on the timeline for the remaining farmers.
The Agriculture Department appointments have also come under scrutiny, with questions raised about their impact on farmers’ welfare. Harish Rao criticized the Congress government for failing to match actions with promises. However, the Congress rebutted, claiming that the loan waiver process is proceeding as planned, without introducing new regulations.
Government Whip Adi Srinivas defended the Congress stance, stating that farmers are content while Harish Rao is attempting to provoke unrest. Adi Srinivas confirmed that a substantial amount of 31 thousand crore rupees will be waived, dismissing Harish Rao’s attempts to incite farmers.
In the backdrop of BRS leaders hinting at a possible upheaval led by KCR, the focus remains on the unresolved issue of loan waivers, with the pink leaders directing criticism at the government.
