Visakhapatnam, a bustling port city, observed World Population Day on Thursday by hosting a number of activities meant to increase public awareness of population-related issues and the dynamics of population change. There are 8.12 billion people on the planet as of right now, of which 1.44 billion live in India. Demographer Professor Muni Swamy talked with Deccan Chronicle about his observations. He emphasized the difficulties in estimating the population of Andhra Pradesh, a state that has seen several splits, making accurate population data difficult to maintain. 2011 saw the completion of the most recent official census, in which Telangana was included by AP.
Professor Swamy mentioned that Andhra Pradesh’s population is on the rise, which presents serious difficulties.
“Increased population pressures can strain education systems, eco- nomic activities, food pro- duction, water resources, healthcare, power, and fossil fuels,” he said.
He emphasized that India is already experiencing a serious water deficit, with severe shortages expected in 2024 in places like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara, Srinagar, and Rajkot. He said that if population growth is allowed to continue uncontrolled, more cities will experience same issues.
According to the demographer, Visakhapatnam is the smallest district in Andhra Pradesh. With 1,670 persons per km^, it has the highest population density in the state, covering an area of 1,048 square km. Alluri Sitharama Raju district, on the other hand, has a density of 77 inhabitants per square kilometre.
Andhra Pradesh takes pride in having a range of literacy rates. With 74.63 percent of people literate, West Godavari leads, followed by Vizianagaram with 58.89 percent.
Anantapur has the lowest male-female sex ratio (977), while Vizianagaram has the highest (1019).
The largest district in Andhra Pradesh is Prakasam, which spans 14,322 km2, whereas the most populous district is Potti Sriramulu Nellore, which has 2.469 million people living there according to the 2011 census. The least populated district is Parvathipuram Manyam (925,000 people), closely followed by Alluri Sitharama Raju (953,960) and Bapatla (1,586,918).
In reference to Visakhapatnam, Professor Swamy stated that the city’s population in 2024 is expected to be 2,385,000, a 2.32 percent rise from 2,331,000 in 2023. This represents a 2.33 percent increase from the 2,278,000 people in 2022, a 2.34 percent increase from the 2,226,000 people in 2021, and a 2.34 percent increase from 2020.
