The iconic Ratnachal Express, the superfast intercity train connecting Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, celebrated its 30th introduction day on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. Since its launch in 1994, the train has become a vital mode of transportation, serving lakhs of passengers commuting between these two major cities.

The celebrations took place at Vijayawada Junction, where railway officials and regular passengers gathered to mark the occasion. Around 30 rail enthusiasts from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana came together to decorate the train at the Trip Shed and Crew Depot Office, adding a festive atmosphere to the event.

Originally introduced as a standard express service with 13 ICF coaches, Ratnachal Express was upgraded to superfast status in 1999, significantly increasing its speed and convenience for passengers. Over the years, the train saw several modern upgrades, including the addition of CBC rakes, boosting its coach capacity to 24, and further improving safety features.

The train now operates with 23 modern LHB coaches, known for their enhanced comfort and safety. Along with the technological improvements in its locomotive power, the train has expanded its halts from 8 to 13 stations, adding important stops such as Nuzividu, Nidadavolu, and Anaparthi to its route. With an impressive occupancy rate of 140%, Ratnachal Express has firmly established itself as a reliable and popular choice for passengers traveling between Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.

Ticket Collector Anjali Patnaik, who has worked on the train for over a decade, shared her experiences: “The Ratnachal Express has always been packed. People love its speed and reliability. Over the years, I’ve seen entire families regularly use this train for their work or education.”

Despite its popularity, some passengers have pointed out issues through reviews on the IRCTC app. A daily commuter from Samalkota to Vijayawada mentioned that while seating and food services were satisfactory, unreserved passengers often occupy reserved seats, causing discomfort for those who had booked in advance. Another passenger, Harsha, emphasized the overcrowding in reserved coaches, particularly during peak hours, which can make it uncomfortable for families and elderly travelers.

Sailaja, another frequent traveler, echoed these concerns, criticizing the lack of action from ticket collectors in managing unreserved passengers in reserved coaches. Despite these challenges, the Ratnachal Express continues to be a lifeline for many, thanks to its speed, reliability, and extensive reach.

As the train enters its fourth decade of service, passengers hope that continued improvements will make their journeys even more comfortable and hassle-free.
