Kiran Rokkam, a passionate snake conservationist, recently led an impactful awareness campaign in Visakhapatnam, aiming to educate the public on the essential role snakes play in our ecosystem. With the powerful message, “Don’t Kill Snakes,” Kiran sought to shift public perception toward these often-feared creatures, fostering empathy and understanding for their protection.

Held near the GVMC Gandhi statue, the event drew attention to the frequent encounters between humans and snakes in urban areas, a growing challenge in Visakhapatnam. Kiran shared his personal experiences rescuing snakes, recounting how he handles an average of five to six rescues every month. He highlighted the dangers snakes face when they stray into human settlements, as frightened residents often attempt to kill them. Kiran’s compassionate intervention, however, helps save countless lives by rescuing, providing medical care, and eventually returning snakes to their natural habitats.

In a recent operation, Kiran rescued several injured pythons that had been harmed in human encounters. With the help of GVMC veterinary staff, these pythons received proper medical treatment and made a full recovery. Kiran then released them into the wild at Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, ensuring they were fit for a safe return to their environment.

As part of his awareness initiative, Kiran also organized an educational session for local students near the Gandhi statue, focusing on the ecological importance of snakes. He explained that snakes play a vital role in controlling pest populations, helping to maintain ecological balance. Students learned about the benefits of coexisting with these reptiles and the potential dangers of harming them, sparking a newfound appreciation for snakes and wildlife.

Kiran’s dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating snakes has significantly impacted public attitudes, promoting a more compassionate and informed approach to wildlife conservation. By spreading awareness about the importance of snakes, he is fostering a sustainable coexistence between humans and nature in Visakhapatnam. Kiran’s inspiring work serves not only to protect these misunderstood creatures but also contributes to broader environmental conservation goals, encouraging harmony with the natural world.
