On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu police conducted a search operation at the Isha Foundation’s premises in Coimbatore. This followed an order from the Madras High Court on Monday, which instructed authorities to gather details of criminal cases registered against the foundation, run by self-styled guru, Jaggi Vasudev.
A 150-member police team, led by an additional superintendent of police along with three deputy superintendents, entered the Isha Foundation campus. They verified the details of the inmates and conducted searches of various rooms at the facility.
The High Court’s directive was issued by Justices Subramaniam and V. Sivagnanam while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by retired professor Dr. S. Kamaraj. The petition alleged that the foundation had held his daughters, Geetha Kamaraj, 42, and Latha Kamaraj, 39, captive, and restricted their contact with their families.
The court also instructed the additional public prosecutor to present a detailed status report by October 4, outlining all criminal cases pending against the foundation.
In its order, the court invoked Article 226 of the Constitution, which empowers High Courts to enforce fundamental rights. The court also took note of the petitioner’s lawyer’s argument, which alleged that a doctor at the foundation was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
This search and investigation are expected to shed light on the ongoing controversies surrounding the Isha Foundation.
