The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant operated by Kashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited has reached a remarkable milestone by surpassing the production of over 100 million tons of saleable steel. A spokesperson from RINL expressed pride in this achievement, stating, “RINL has exceeded 100 million tons of saleable steel production since its inception. This milestone highlights our unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and dedication.”

The journey of this accomplishment began on April 17, 1970, with the announcement by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for the establishment of a steel plant in Visakhapatnam. With assistance from the former USSR, a detailed project report for a 3.4 million ton per annum plant was finalized in November 1980. Subsequently, a contract was signed with the USSR in February 1981 for the creation of working drawings for essential components like the coke oven, blast furnace, and sinter plant. The foundation for the blast furnace was laid, marking the beginning of construction, with the first mass concreting taking place in January 1982. Concurrently, the development of the local township also commenced. On February 18, 1982, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited was officially established, leading to the separation of VSP from SAIL, with RINL assuming the role of the corporate entity for the plant in April 1982. The production of saleable steel began in November 1990, marking a significant milestone in the plant’s history.
