This Diwali, while millions across India celebrated with vibrant lights and fireworks, the tribal villagers of Bo-origa, Chinna Konala, Simmuduvalasa, and Dangervalasa in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district chose a different path. Holding flaming kagadas (wooden torches) and chanting powerful slogans, over 120 Konda Dora tribal families marched through the Rompelli panchayat of Anantagiri mandal, demanding the one thing they lack even after 78 years of independence—electricity in their homes.
These villagers, who have long lived without electricity, used this Diwali night, coinciding with Amavasya (the no-moon day), to bring attention to their plight. Despite a directive from the district collector under the Janman scheme to provide electricity to all, only eight families have received power while records inaccurately report that all families are connected.
Village head Buriga Pentaiah shared, “It has been 78 years since our country gained independence, yet we, the Adivasi tribes in these hilltop villages, continue to live in darkness.” Fellow villagers like Somula Shankarrao and Somula Appalaraju added, “We celebrate our weddings and festivals under the glow of traditional torches. In a country that aspires to progress, we are still left behind.”
Led by prominent village heads such as Konaparthi Simhachalam and Somula Sanyasi Rao, along with a significant number of women, the villagers chanted, “We too are human beings. Recognize us.” Their march symbolizes their resolve to bring electricity—a basic necessity—into their lives.
This protest highlights the importance of bridging the gap between urban and rural India, ensuring that even the most remote communities have access to essential infrastructure. As these villagers stand in solidarity, their voices echo a timeless call for recognition, equality, and a brighter future.
