In a significant development for India-US relations, sources reveal that President Donald Trump regards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India as true friends. Modi was among the first world leaders Trump reached out to after his recent election victory, emphasizing their strong personal connection. Their camaraderie and commitment to strengthening bilateral ties were famously displayed during the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston in 2019 and the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad in 2020.
Reflecting on Trump’s return to the White House, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla expressed optimism about the renewed collaboration. “Modi and Trump have a very strong personal connect. He has a lot of interest and respect for India,” said Shringla, who served as ambassador to the US during Trump’s first tenure. Likewise, Ajay Bisaria, former high commissioner to Canada and Pakistan, highlighted that Trump is seen as a “tested partner” for India, capable of reinvigorating ties through deeper geopolitical engagement and strengthening the Quad alliance to counter China.
Under the Biden administration, India-US relations faced challenges, with criticisms over India’s record on human rights and religious freedoms. With Trump’s victory, however, there is optimism that tensions may ease. Trump’s policy agenda could see an increase in private investments and a strategic shift of global supply chains to India, benefitting both economies.
Additionally, former diplomat Vikas Swarup emphasized that Trump’s chemistry with Modi could enable leader-level resolutions on pressing issues, smoothing over past tensions. As part of his campaign, Trump reached out to the Indian-American community, a vital 5.2 million-strong population, pledging to protect Hindu Americans and strengthen the partnership with India.
A key foreign policy advantage for India could come from Trump’s commitment to addressing the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts. Given Modi and Trump’s rapport, Trump may seek India’s involvement in peacebuilding efforts, positioning India as a key player on the global stage.
Following Trump’s victory, PM Modi congratulated him on X, stating, “Heartiest congratulations my friend Donald Trump on your historic election victory. I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership.” Trump is expected to visit India next year for the Quad summit, marking a new chapter in India-US relations.
