Unraveling the Mystery of Color Changes in Visakhapatnam’s Sea: Insights from National Institute of Oceanography

The color of the sea in Visakhapatnam has been undergoing a fascinating transformation recently, catching the attention of both scientists and locals. Initially known for its serene blue hue, a portion of the Bhimili coast has been spotted with a peculiar light red color, sparking curiosity and concern among onlookers.

Prompted by these changes, the experts at the National Institute of Oceanography have embarked on a thorough examination of the water in the region. Not limited to Bhimili, even a section of Visakha RK Beach appears to have undergone a similar color shift, reminiscent of past instances where the sea took on a reddish tint, leaving many in apprehension.

Delving deeper into the phenomenon, scientists and officials discovered that the alteration in color was attributed to the soil being carried into the sea by the impact of waves, causing the affected areas to turn red. Further investigations around the submarine museum area unveiled that the introduction of soil from the red mud region was a contributing factor to the sea’s altered appearance.

Moreover, the presence of Notiluca bloom, a bioluminescent organism known for its green and red colors, has added complexity to the situation. While the west coast occasionally witnesses the sea turning green due to these organisms, the monsoon season in Cochin sees a striking red hue, signaling the presence of Notiluca bloom. The repercussions of such occurrences can be dire, leading to mass fish fatalities and a visible change in the water’s color.

National Institute of Oceanography’s Regional Director, VVSS Sharma, shed light on the ongoing investigations, emphasizing the need to understand the causes behind the color changes. Despite initial suspicions surrounding Notiluca bloom, closer examinations revealed a different narrative, hinting at the influence of mud deposits in altering the sea’s coloration.

As the research continues, recent observations at Bhimili beach have raised concerns regarding the potential involvement of Notiluca bloom in the light red coloration. VVSS Sharma’s commitment to unraveling the mysteries surrounding the sea’s color shifts reflects the dedication of scientists towards preserving the marine ecosystem and understanding the intricate balance of nature.

Meanwhile, at RK beach, visitors have been left astounded by the sudden alteration in the sea’s color, breaking away from its usual blue palette and prompting further inquiries into the underlying causes.
