Following protests by medical professionals and staff regarding the alleged rape and murder at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, the Union Home Ministry has directed all state police forces to submit situation reports every two hours. In a message to the additional D-Gs of state police forces, the Union home ministry emphasized the need to monitor the law and order situation in all states due to the ongoing demonstrations. The communication specified that a continuous law and order situation report should be sent to the MHA control room in New Delhi by fax, email, or WhatsApp every two hours starting from 1600 hours on the same day.

Doctors and healthcare staff across the country have been demonstrating, impacting the operations of medical facilities. They are advocating for a national law to address violence against healthcare workers, as well as the designation of hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security measures, among other requests. In response to the outcry over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Supreme Court is scheduled to address the issue on Tuesday. The case, titled “In Re: Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata and related issue,” will be heard by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra.

The investigation into the incident was handed over to the CBI by the Kolkata police following a directive from the Calcutta High Court on August 13. Expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police, the High Court transferred the case to the CBI after considering petitions from the victim’s parents and others. Criticizing the West Bengal government for failing to prevent vandalism at RG Kar Hospital during protests, the High Court took action to address the concerns raised by the victim’s family.

Amidst the aftermath of the tragic event, the Kolkata police summoned Trinamul Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy for questioning after he called for the arrest of the city’s police chief and the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Both the police commissioner and the ex-principal have come under scrutiny following the untimely death of the young woman.
