The water level in the Godavari River is currently decreasing, and ASR district collector Dinesh Kumar mentioned on Monday evening that the alert level 1 could be removed at any time. He announced that all roads will be accessible by Tuesday, facilitating the distribution of relief supplies by officials. Approximately half of the individuals staying in the relief camps have returned to their homes, while around 3,800 families are still residing in the camps.
Since the onset of heavy rains on July 18, a total of 8,000 families have been relocated to flood relief camps in the Chintur sub-division, affecting a population of 83,314 individuals. Initial reports indicate that 212 houses have been damaged, and a more precise assessment will be possible once the water recedes. There have been no reported fatalities except for the discovery of a decomposed body, and the status of livestock remains unknown.
The collector mentioned that 130 villages are still isolated, awaiting the reopening of roads. Addressing concerns about the conditions in the relief camps, he highlighted that the oil company in Vizag has supplied 8,000 liters of kerosene for lighting and cooking for the affected families. Additionally, 8,000 rechargeable torches were distributed to those stranded.
In response to heavy rainfall and increased flood flows upstream, authorities at the Srisailam dam have opened three crest gates for the first time this season. By activating the flood flow management system, they have released 28,000 cubic feet (cusecs) of water through each gate, totaling 84,000 cusecs from gates 6, 7, and 8 out of the 12 gates at the irrigation project. As of Monday, the water level in the Srisailam reservoir stood at 878.40 feet, slightly below its full capacity level of 885 feet.
