The Visakhapatnam Police Department is setting a new benchmark in traffic management and crime prevention by integrating advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology into its operations. This pilot project, revealed by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Traffic K. Praveen Kumar, marks a significant leap toward smarter and safer urban living.

Key Features of the AI Initiative:

  1. Enhanced Traffic Management
    • Smart Traffic Lights: AI-driven traffic signals will adapt to real-time traffic conditions, reducing wait times and improving vehicle throughput.
    • Automated Violations Detection: The system will identify helmet infractions and other traffic violations, sending automatic challans to offenders.
  2. Accident Alerts and Rapid Response
    • Immediate notifications will be sent to the nearest station house officer (SHO) in case of accidents or roadside altercations, ensuring quicker response times.
  3. Crime Prevention through AI Surveillance
    • Facial Recognition Technology: The system will maintain a database of known criminals. If a person with a criminal record passes a designated point, AI will alert the police in real-time.
    • Enhanced tracking capabilities will identify criminals moving from other cities, such as Hyderabad, to Visakhapatnam.
  4. Accountability for Vehicle Owners
    • Vehicle owners will be held responsible for traffic violations committed by individuals using their vehicles, promoting responsible lending practices.

Collaboration for Implementation

Various agencies are working together to identify optimal locations for cameras and signal equipment. Recommendations will be sent to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and then to the state government for approval.

“This initiative is a game-changer for urban safety and management, merging traffic control with law enforcement to make our city smarter and safer,” said Ravi Eswarapu, CEO of AI Skill Hub at Andhra University.

Transforming Visakhapatnam

This AI-powered system is not just about managing traffic; it’s about revolutionizing urban safety. With advanced surveillance and real-time responsiveness, the initiative is expected to enhance public safety, reduce crime rates, and create a more efficient urban infrastructure.
