As the vibrant festival of Goddess Durga approaches, Visakhapatnam is brimming with excitement and anticipation. With just a week left until the grand celebrations kick off, idol makers are working tirelessly to meet demand, while Bengali associations across the city gear up for a festive season like no other.
Local idol maker Keta Srinivas shared insights into this year’s idol production. “Last year, we crafted around 60 to 70 idols, but this year we’ve only managed to make 30 to 35 due to a shortage of workers,” he explained. The largest idol produced this year stands at a towering 13 feet, priced at ₹75,000, while smaller idols, ranging between 4 to 5 feet, are available for ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. Despite the reduced numbers, the artisans are ensuring that each idol reflects the beauty and grandeur of the festival.
Among the key players in organizing the festivities is the Waltair Kalibari Committee, which is preparing to host a grand Durga Puja. Committee member Alok Dutta announced that the celebrations will officially commence on October 8, known as Panchami, with an inauguration led by the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and other railway officials.
The Durga Puja festival spans ten days, celebrating the triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. The festival begins with Mahalaya, a day dedicated to the painting of eyes on the clay idols of Durga, symbolizing her awakening. Following the Panchami inauguration, a series of cultural activities will take place at the Kali Bari, including the unveiling of Durga Mata’s face, which will be the main highlight of the Panchami day.
On Sasthi (October 9), families of committee members will showcase their talents through various performances, adding a personal touch to the celebrations. The festivities will continue with the serving of free Bhog Prasadam to between 5,000 to 6,000 people daily during the most auspicious days of Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami (October 10-12).
Adding to the vibrancy of the festival is the eagerly awaited dandiya, which begins on October 2 and brings an extra dose of energy and joy to the celebrations. As the city prepares to honor Goddess Durga, the spirit of devotion, culture, and togetherness will be on full display, making this Durga Puja an event to remember.
