This Diwali season, Visakhapatnam has witnessed a significant rise in the number of authorized firecracker stalls, with 510 stalls approved across major locations, an increase of 80 compared to last year. Popular sites for these sales include the Andhra University Grounds, AS Raja Grounds, NAD Flyover, and other key areas, ensuring ample accessibility for residents throughout the city.

The Andhra University Grounds is home to the largest concentration of vendors, with 150 stalls offering a wide range of firecrackers. AS Raja Grounds has 33 stalls, each showcasing an array of festive products. Regional Fire Safety Officer Hanumanth Rao confirmed that 510 out of 536 applications have been granted approval, with strict adherence to safety protocols, including the use of fire-resistant materials in stall construction and mandatory on-site fire extinguishers.

Vendors have reported a mixed outlook for this year’s market. Nagendra, a shop owner selling both wholesale and retail, noted an improvement in sales compared to last year, adding that some brands have even lowered prices. However, Ganesh, a stall owner at the AU Grounds, mentioned a downturn due to a 10-15% price increase for certain products, which may impact demand. Currently, popular items range from ₹3,500 for 5,000-wala crackers to ₹9,500 for the larger 10,000-wala varieties. Essential items like sparklers are available at ₹180 per packet, while small toys like snake fireworks are priced between ₹40-₹60.

Consumer attitudes also reflect varied preferences. Anjali, a customer at the grounds, shared her approach to spending cautiously, saying, “I limit my purchases to sparklers worth ₹500 for my children; spending more feels like burning money.” Meanwhile, Ravi, another shopper, maintains a more traditional perspective, expressing that Diwali is an opportunity to unite his family through shared celebrations and a variety of firecrackers.

The authorized sale period began on October 29 and will continue until October 31, with stalls permitted to operate from early morning until 10 pm. As the city embraces Diwali, the festive atmosphere is further enriched by the diversity of celebrations and perspectives in Visakhapatnam’s bustling firecracker market.
