Dr. Rajendra Singh, renowned as the Waterman of India and serving as the chairman of the People’s World Commission on Drought and Flood, voiced his apprehensions regarding the escalating pollution that is adversely impacting the environment in Visakhapatnam. His recent exploration of various sites in Vizag, such as Erra Matti Dibbalu, Mudasarlova Reservoir, and Chillapeta Tank, shed light on the pressing environmental concerns in the region.
During his inspection of Mudasarlova Reservoir, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of safeguarding water, referring to it as a precious resource that should remain unpolluted. He called upon the authorities to take proactive measures to prevent the contamination of water bodies by addressing the issue of polluted drains affecting their catchment areas.
At Chillapeta Tank (Tagarapuvalasa Pond), Dr. Singh expressed his dismay over the dwindling population of bird species, notably dropping from 107 to a mere few, including the painted stork. Additionally, upon learning about the recent flattening of certain Erra Matti Dibbalu, recognized as a geo-heritage site, he urged the authorities to hold accountable those responsible and solicit expert guidance for the restoration of the distinctive red sand mounds.
