In a heartwarming initiative to fight hunger and reduce food waste, young volunteers from Chodavaram have taken a significant step by installing a community fridge near the Swayambhu Vigneshwara Temple. This thoughtful endeavor aims to provide easy access to food for the homeless and those in need, ensuring that no one in the town goes hungry.

The community fridge, installed by the Care Development and Vision Management Community Foundation, is a 400-litre unit available to the public from 8 AM to 9:30 PM daily. It offers a lifeline to impoverished individuals, including the elderly, disabled, and those living on the streets who may not have the means to purchase food. The concept is simple: residents are encouraged to donate excess food from celebrations like birthdays, weddings, or other gatherings to the fridge, where it can be accessed by those in need.

Rajesh K, the founder of the Care Development and Vision Management Community Foundation, shared with Deccan Chronicle that this initiative is modeled after successful community fridge programs in cities like Mumbai, Kerala, and Gurgaon. He stated, “Individuals in need can freely take food from the fridge. We researched both successful programs and challenges in nearby places like Anakapalle and Vizag before committing to this effort. We are determined to make it a success in Chodavaram.”

The fridge was inaugurated by Chodavaram MLA K.S.N.S. Raju, who praised the initiative and expressed his full support. The foundation has plans to expand this initiative by installing more community fridges in different areas of the town, further strengthening the local community’s support network for the disadvantaged.

This inspiring effort is a prime example of how community-driven projects can address pressing social issues like hunger while simultaneously reducing food waste. By providing an easy way for people to donate leftover food, this initiative not only helps those in need but also fosters a culture of compassion and collective responsibility.
