The Significance of Govardhan Puja

  2. Make Govardhan Giri: Create an idol of Govardhan and Lord Krishna using cow dung in your home.
  3. Decorate the Idols: Adorn the idols with flowers, turmeric, saffron, and akshatas.
  4. Offerings: Present milk, tambulam, and various food items as offerings to the deities.
  5. Circumambulation: Perform a parikrama (circumambulation) around the Govardhan idol, ideally seven or eleven times.
  6. Aarti and Prasad Distribution: Conclude with aarti and distribute the offered food as prasad among family members.

What to Do on Govardhan Puja Day

  • Wake up early and offer arghya to Lord Surya.
  • Consume only sattvic food.
  • Chant Lord Krishna’s names.
  • Worship cows and engage in charitable acts.

What Not to Do on Govardhan Puja Day

  • Avoid arguments and abusive language.
  • Refrain from consuming tamasic food (heavy, lethargy-inducing).
  • Do not insult elders or women.
  • Keep your surroundings clean and avoid disturbing cows.

Mantras to Recite During Govardhan Puja

Recite the following mantra for blessings and prosperity: Govardhan Dharadhara Gokula Tranakaraka Vishnubahu Kritochchhaya Gavam Kotiprabho Bhava.
