Pakistan’s former Test captain, Babar Azam, faced a challenging match against Bangladesh recently. Babar experienced a setback by getting dismissed for zero at home for the first time in a Test match. Positioned at number four in the lineup, he fell to Shoriful Islam’s delivery in the ninth over. Following the controversial dismissal of captain Shaun Masood, Babar was forced to leave the field after a remarkable catch by wicketkeeper Liton Das on the second ball of the over. Babar’s brief appearance saw him face only two balls before returning to the pavilion without scoring.
Fans had high hopes for Babar’s return to Test cricket at home after nearly 20 months since Pakistan’s last home Test match in January 2023. However, Babar’s performance fell short of expectations, marking the first time in three years that he was dismissed for a zero in Test cricket. Prior to the match, Shoriful Islam had expressed his desire to claim Babar’s wicket, a wish that he fulfilled with a superb catch by Liton Das off a delivery bowled outside leg stump. Despite Babar’s attempt to hit a boundary behind the wicket, Das’ exceptional diving catch sealed his fate.
Babar missed a chance to set a new record by not scoring a century in the match, which would have made him the fastest batsman to reach 4000 runs in Test cricket. With 3898 runs in 94 innings across 52 matches, Babar needs 102 more runs to achieve this milestone. The question now remains whether Babar will surpass this achievement in the upcoming innings.
