The Women’s T20 World Cup, initially planned to take place in Bangladesh, faced a venue change as turmoil engulfed the nation. Originally set for October 3, the tournament will now be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following an announcement by the ICC on August 20.
The decision to relocate the event came amidst escalating political instability in Bangladesh, triggered by protests against the government’s policies. The unrest culminated in violent protests and a call for Prime Minister Hasina’s resignation by the Bangladesh Army.
As the situation in Bangladesh deteriorated, with widespread violence and targeted attacks on minorities, including Hindus, the ICC had to reconsider the feasibility of hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup there.
Discussions during an ICC meeting on August 20 highlighted concerns about holding the tournament in Bangladesh amid the ongoing crisis. Consequently, the Bangladesh Cricket Board and ICC agreed to move the event to the UAE while maintaining Bangladesh as the official host.
Criticism of the initial decision to host the tournament in Bangladesh was voiced by Australian captain Alyssa Healy, who emphasized the country’s more pressing challenges and the strain it would place on local resources. The shift to the UAE was seen as a necessary step given the circumstances, ensuring the safety and success of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.
