Weather Alert for Andhra Pradesh

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for Andhra Pradesh as a severe low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal continues to influence the region. Light to moderate rains are expected across the state, with heavy rainfall likely in districts such as Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, and Tirupati from Monday to Thursday.

Unpredictable Low Pressure Movement

The low-pressure area, which formed on December 16, was expected to weaken by Saturday. However, its erratic movements, influenced by westerly winds, have made it difficult for meteorologists to predict its path accurately. The remnants of this low pressure are now moving towards the south coast of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, a rare and concerning development.

Impact on Farmers and Coastal Communities

This year has been particularly challenging for Andhra Pradesh, with frequent low-pressure systems and cyclones wreaking havoc. Farmers are once again on edge, fearing the potential destruction of their crops.

Meanwhile, coastal areas are bracing for winds of up to 55 km/h. Ports have been placed under warning number 3, and fishermen have been advised to stay ashore from today until Thursday as a precautionary measure.

What to Expect

  • Rainfall: Heavy rains are likely in the southern districts of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Winds: Coastal areas may experience winds of up to 55 km/h.
  • Advisories: Fishermen are urged to avoid venturing into the sea, and residents in low-lying areas should remain cautious.

Rare Weather Phenomenon

Meteorological experts have highlighted the rarity of such chaotic low-pressure movements. While it was initially predicted to weaken, its unpredictable path has raised concerns. Officials are closely monitoring the system, and more clarity on its impact is expected in the coming hours.

Conclusion

Residents of Andhra Pradesh are advised to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The state’s resilience will once again be tested as it faces these challenging weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory, signaling the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal on November 23. This development could lead to significant weather changes in Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

Weather System Details

According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining regions on November 21. This system is expected to move west-northwestwards and develop into a low-pressure area by November 23. It could intensify further into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the subsequent two days, with its trajectory being closely monitored.

Impact on Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema

The low-pressure system is likely to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to south coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Nellore and Prakasam districts, as well as Rayalaseema regions such as Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor, Anantapur, and YSR districts.

  • Rainfall Predictions:
    • November 26–29: Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated very heavy downpours.
    • November 30–December 1: Light to moderate rains expected to persist over south coastal AP and Rayalaseema.

Advisory for Farmers

The IMD has advised farmers in the affected regions to take necessary precautions and complete the harvesting of crops by November 25 to minimize potential losses due to heavy rains.

Precautionary Measures for Public

Residents are urged to stay updated with weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel in areas likely to experience heavy rainfall. Local authorities are preparing to handle any disruptions caused by the system’s intensification and subsequent impact.

As the low-pressure system progresses, the IMD will continue to monitor its movement and provide updates on its potential effects.

The Visakhapatnam Beach Road is at imminent risk of landslides along its 23 km stretch, as is the railway track between Visakhapatnam and Kirandul, due to the continuous rains that began on July 19 in northern coastal Andhra Pradesh, experts have warned.

On Monday, some smaller boulders rolled down and struck the compound wall of the Telugu Desam office near Ramnagar, though no injuries were reported. Additionally, boulders fell from a hill in Sanjeevinagar Colony in Gajuwaka, causing panic among residents.

Prof. E. Dhananjay Rao from the Department of Geology at Andhra University stated, “The issues with Kailasagiri Beach Road and the Vizag-Kirandul rail track are man-made. The Kailasagiri Hill was improperly excavated to construct the Beach Road, and district officials failed to take necessary precautions against rock falls. If rainfall continues for a week, there is a significant risk of rocks falling onto the road. The danger extends along the 23-km Beach Road wherever hillocks are present.” He noted that over the past two decades, several lives have been lost to falling boulders during the rainy season.

On October 26, 2019, large boulders fell onto the Beach Road near the Kailasagiri hillock, blocking the busy road for hours. Similarly, landslide incidents between Vizag and Kirandul through Araku Valley frequently occur during monsoons.

In a tragic event on August 4, 2006, massive boulders crashed onto Kodipunjuvalasa village in the Araku mandal of the Visakhapatnam agency, killing 18 people and destroying 15 houses, leading to the village’s complete relocation.
