Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal Intensifies: Heavy Rains and Cold Weather Ahead for Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam, December 25: The low-pressure area that developed in the west-central Bay of Bengal has strengthened, bringing significant weather changes across Andhra Pradesh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system, located off the south coast and north Tamil Nadu, is expected to move west-southwestward and gradually weaken over the next 24 hours.

In addition to the low-pressure system, a surface depression at 4.5 km altitude is influencing weather patterns across the region. Combined with a western trough moving over North India, the system is drawing moisture and causing widespread rains and a notable dip in temperatures.

Rain Forecast and Areas Likely to Be Affected

The IMD predicts light to moderate rains across the state for the next three days, with some districts experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms:

  • December 26–28: South coastal districts may experience scattered moderate rains.
  • Nellore and Chittoor Districts: Heavy rains with thundershowers are likely.
  • Fisherman Warning: The department has issued advisories against fishing due to turbulent sea conditions.

On Tuesday, light rains accompanied by cold winds lashed multiple districts, including Alluri Seetharamaraju, Vizianagaram, Krishna, Bapatla, Eluru, East Godavari, and Visakhapatnam. Coastal areas experienced cloudy skies and significant temperature drops.

Cold Wave Intensifies

The impact of the low-pressure system has caused temperatures across the state to plummet by 2 to 4 degrees below normal. In some regions like Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, Tuni, and Kakinada, the temperature dropped by 3 to 7 degrees, amplifying the chill.

Ports Under High Alert

The third warning signal remains in place at all ports in Andhra Pradesh as rough seas persist. High waves, reaching up to 5 meters, were observed along the Tirupati district coast on Tuesday.

Weather Outlook

The weather pattern is expected to stabilize by the weekend. Rainfall is likely to subside after Saturday, bringing relief from the current wet and cold conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory, signaling the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal on November 23. This development could lead to significant weather changes in Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

Weather System Details

According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining regions on November 21. This system is expected to move west-northwestwards and develop into a low-pressure area by November 23. It could intensify further into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the subsequent two days, with its trajectory being closely monitored.

Impact on Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema

The low-pressure system is likely to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to south coastal Andhra Pradesh, including Nellore and Prakasam districts, as well as Rayalaseema regions such as Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor, Anantapur, and YSR districts.

  • Rainfall Predictions:
    • November 26–29: Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated very heavy downpours.
    • November 30–December 1: Light to moderate rains expected to persist over south coastal AP and Rayalaseema.

Advisory for Farmers

The IMD has advised farmers in the affected regions to take necessary precautions and complete the harvesting of crops by November 25 to minimize potential losses due to heavy rains.

Precautionary Measures for Public

Residents are urged to stay updated with weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel in areas likely to experience heavy rainfall. Local authorities are preparing to handle any disruptions caused by the system’s intensification and subsequent impact.

As the low-pressure system progresses, the IMD will continue to monitor its movement and provide updates on its potential effects.

Visakhapatnam has been heavily impacted by continuous rainfall for the past 24 hours, caused by the northeast monsoons and a low-pressure system. The city recorded 6 cm of rainfall, with Bheemili receiving 3.3 cm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The relentless downpour has led to severe disruptions in daily life, including landslides, flooding, and waterlogging across various parts of the city.

In the Gajuwaka area, a tin shed collapsed in Kongapalem village, injuring 45-year-old Nakka Ramakrishna Reddy. While no further injuries or major house collapses have been reported, the collapse has raised concerns about the structural safety of makeshift shelters in heavy rains. Waterlogging has been widespread, with key areas like Poorna Market, Gnanapuram, MVP Colony, and Gajuwaka heavily impacted. In Gnanapuram, water accumulation under a railway overbridge nearly brought traffic to a halt, with motorists struggling to navigate flooded streets.

Residents living in hillock areas like Gopalapatnam, Kailasapuram, and Hanumanthwaka are particularly anxious about potential landslides, while hawkers and vendors in RK Beach, MVP Colony, and other parts of the city stayed off the streets. The IMD has forecasted thundershowers for the next three days, with the low-pressure system likely to intensify over the Bay of Bengal on October 22.

Additionally, sea levels surged at the Uppada coast in Kakinada District and Vodalarevu in Allavaram mandal due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal. The violent sea conditions have rendered the Uppada-Kakinada beach road unusable, prompting the police to cancel traffic overnight. Houses in villages like Subbampeta and Ameenabad have been submerged, and coconut trees uprooted, while 104 houses have been inundated by the rising sea.

In other areas, such as Nellore and Tirupati, heavy rains have started to recede, bringing relief to residents. However, the downpour damaged 656.35 hectares of crops and submerged 115 houses in Nellore. Despite the damage, reservoirs in Tirupati district, like the Thondamanadu tank, have been replenished, offering benefits to local farmland.

Authorities are working diligently to restore normalcy, with officials visiting affected areas to assess the damage and ensure necessary relief measures are taken.

A low-pressure area has developed over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjacent coastal regions of Bangladesh and West Bengal, bringing concerns of heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Amaravati has reported that this weather system is being influenced by upper air circulation over southwest Bangladesh and its surrounding areas, with cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height.

Stella, the Director of IMD Amaravati, explained that the situation is being closely monitored to confirm whether this cyclonic circulation will intensify into a more defined low-pressure system. If it does, Andhra Pradesh, particularly the coastal regions and Rayalaseema, could experience moderate to heavy rainfall starting from October 7. Thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning, are also expected in isolated areas across north and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema.

The upper air cyclonic circulation also extends over the West Central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. This development is likely to enhance rainfall activity in the coming days, prompting local authorities to issue advisories for residents to stay alert.

IMD has advised caution for those in low-lying areas, as well as for fishermen who may be venturing into the seas during this period. The department has also highlighted the possibility of thunderstorms, and residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid open areas during such events.

While the extent of the rainfall is yet to be fully confirmed, the cyclonic circulation is expected to bring much-needed relief from the heat, but at the same time, could lead to temporary disruptions in transportation and public services due to heavy downpours. Citizens are advised to follow weather updates and take necessary precautions.
