Sumit Antil, the Tokyo Paralympics gold medalist Indian javelin thrower, is determined to surpass his own world record as he aims to defend his title in the Men’s F64 category at the upcoming Paris Games. Alongside Bhagyashree Jadhav, who competes in the shot put F34 category, Sumit will proudly carry India’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games scheduled from August 28 to September 8, 2024.

Sumit’s remarkable achievements include setting a world record three times at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, where he secured gold with a phenomenal throw of 68.55 meters. He further pushed his limits by achieving a world record throw of 70.83 meters at the 2023 Para World Championships and clinching gold at the Hangzhou Para Asian Games (2023) with an impressive effort of 73.29 meters.

The F64 category is specifically designed for athletes facing challenges with their lower limb(s), including those using prosthetics or affected by leg length differences. Sumit’s ambitious target is to reach a distance of 80 meters in the long run, but for the Paris Paralympics, he aims to secure gold with a throw of 75 meters, as stated by the 26-year-old athlete.

Despite facing the pressure of defending his championship title and bearing India’s flag, Sumit remains composed, expressing his focus on giving his best performance without succumbing to pressure. He cherishes the opportunity to be the flag-bearer and looks forward to savoring the unique experience of the opening ceremony, unlike the restricted circumstances during the Tokyo Paralympics due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sumit’s dedication to practice and minimal participation in competitions post-Tokyo Paralympics highlights his unwavering commitment to winning a medal for India at the Paralympics. His preference for training in India, particularly at the Sports Authority of India’s Sonipat center, underscores his trust in the world-class facilities available locally.

Reflecting on Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal in the Olympics, Sumit commends Neeraj’s performance and emphasizes the unpredictability of competition outcomes at such elite levels. He acknowledges the government’s support, particularly through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which has provided him with prosthetic legs and necessary resources for his sporting endeavors.

Sumit Antil’s journey epitomizes resilience, determination, and national pride as he sets his sights on making India proud once again at the upcoming Paris Paralympics.
