Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are underway after a significant gap of ten years, marking a crucial moment in the political landscape of the union territory. The polling for the first phase of the elections has commenced today, focusing on 24 assembly seats distributed across seven districts. A total of 219 candidates are vying for victory in these constituencies, with 3,276 polling stations strategically positioned in 16 locations in Kashmir and 8 locations in Jammu to accommodate the 23,27,000 eligible voters.

The electoral process has been fortified with heightened security measures, including the deployment of 300 additional companies of paramilitary forces alongside the local police to ensure a smooth and secure voting environment. Notably, the Congress and National Conference have joined forces in an alliance, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), People’s Conference, and other parties are contesting independently, setting the stage for a competitive three-way race in various regions.

The outcome of these elections holds immense significance as it will determine the future leadership in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. With the participation of prominent figures like PDP President Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter, Iltija Mufti, in the electoral fray, the stakes are high as the electorate eagerly anticipates the results scheduled for October 8.

It has been confirmed that the Andhra Pradesh Group-1 Mains exams, originally scheduled to take place from September 2 to 9, have been postponed. The delay comes as a result of the tight timeline between the APPSC Group 2 and Group 1 exams, prompting candidates to request the rescheduling. Since the Group 1 preliminary examination, candidates have been advocating for selection in the ratio of 1:100, a plea that remains unaddressed by both the state government and the commission.

During the ‘Varadhi’ program at the BJP state office in Vijayawada, numerous candidates submitted petitions seeking selection in the desired ratio. BJP state president, Rajamahendravaram MP Daggubati Purandeshwari, along with official representative Sadhineni Yamini Sharma, received these applications. The candidates also urged MP Purandeswari to expedite compensation for the expansion of Vijayawada West Bypass.

Additionally, victims raised concerns about a woman named Durga Devi, alleging that she fraudulently collected large sums of money under the guise of selling plots. They called for severe punishment and the return of their funds. In response, Purandeshwari contacted Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita, pressing for action to resolve the issue.

In a separate development, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the results of the Tier 1 written examination for Sub Inspector positions in Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The online exam, held from June 27 to 29, revealed category-wise cut off marks for male and female candidates. Notably, 7,335 female and 76,278 male candidates successfully qualified in the Paper-1 examination.
