As of 6 PM on Saturday, water resources department personnel in Dhavaleswaram, East Godavari district, lifted all 175 crest gates two meters, releasing approximately 4.09 lakh cusecs of water from the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage. Authorities plan to release an additional five to six lakh cusecs by Saturday night, depending on ongoing inflows.

With the Godavari River’s water level rising, officials at the Polavaram project aim to release 8.82 lakh cusecs of water by 8 AM on Sunday. They are closely monitoring both banks of the river, especially vulnerable areas, to prevent any accidents.

To mitigate flooding, authorities are releasing about 6,500 cusecs from the Prakasam Barrage into the Krishna River, which is receiving approximately 7,000 cusecs from upstream. Water releases into irrigation canals have been halted as they are already overflowing. T.J.H. Prasad, a superintending engineer in the water resources department, reassured the public, stating, “There need not be any panic; we are all on guard to ensure safety for the people,” unless the discharge exceeds three lakh cusecs.

Following the IMD’s forecast of significant rainfall in the district over the next 28 hours, NTR district collector G. Srujana held a review meeting with officials, urging action to prevent crop damage and potential casualties. She has authorized the establishment of rehabilitation plans and the provision of essential supplies such as rice, oil, dals, and candles. Srujana also called for the evacuation of residents from the most vulnerable homes in the city to ensure their safety.
