As Cyclone Dana advances toward the Odisha coast, more than 1.14 lakh people in West Bengal have been evacuated to safer shelters, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha by Friday morning, with wind speeds predicted to reach up to 120 kmph (75 mph), according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The coastal regions of West Bengal and Odisha are bracing for the impact, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds forecast for October 24 and 25. IMD Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the landfall process will begin late on October 24 and continue through the early hours of October 25, with wind speeds peaking at 120 kmph.

In response to the cyclone, several precautionary measures have been put in place. Flight operations at Kolkata airport will be suspended for 15 hours starting at 6 pm on Thursday until 9 am on Friday. Eastern Railway has also cancelled 190 local trains in its Sealdah division between 8 pm on Thursday and 10 am on Friday to ensure passenger safety.

West Bengal’s coastal districts, including Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Paschim and Purba Medinipur, and Kolkata, are under high alert. The state government has identified 2,82,863 people for evacuation from these areas. So far, 1,14,613 residents, primarily from the coastal regions of South 24 Parganas, including Sagar Island, the Sundarbans, and Kakdwip, have been safely relocated.

State Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose assured that the government is working tirelessly to manage the situation. “We are working round the clock to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas,” Bose said.

To support the evacuation and relief efforts, 13 battalions from the state’s disaster management force and 14 battalions from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed across the coastal regions of West Bengal and Odisha. Emergency response teams are on high alert to deal with any potential fallout from the cyclone.

As Cyclone Dana approaches, residents in the affected regions are urged to stay indoors, follow government advisories, and remain updated on weather alerts for any sudden changes in the storm’s trajectory.

As Cyclone Dana approaches the eastern coast, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert regarding its potential to develop into a severe cyclonic storm. Located approximately 700 km southeast of Paradeep (Odisha), 750 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal), and 730 km southeast of Khepupara (Bangladesh), the storm has already begun to impact weather patterns in the region.

Current Status of Cyclone Dana

According to the latest bulletin from the Meteorological Department, the low-pressure system formed in the east-central Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a storm. Cyclone Dana is expected to cross the coast between Puri and Sagar Island, likely making landfall on Thursday night (October 24th) to Friday morning (October 25th). As a result, both Odisha and West Bengal are already experiencing heavy rainfall, with forecasts predicting gusts of wind reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour during the storm’s impact.

Impact on Telugu States

The weather department has issued a high alert for the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, anticipating heavy rainfall in several districts. Specifically, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitamaraju, Visakha, and Anakapalli districts in Andhra Pradesh can expect substantial rainfall on October 24th and 25th.

On Wednesday, areas such as Kurnool, Nandyala, Anantapur, Sri Sathyasai, Annamaiya, and Chittoor are also likely to experience light to moderate to heavy rains, while lighter rainfall is expected in parts of Prakasam, Nellore, YSR, and Tirupati districts.

Warning for Fishermen

The Meteorological Department has issued a stern warning for fishermen, advising against venturing out to sea as winds have already picked up speed, reaching 45 to 55 kilometers per hour along the coast. Danger warnings have been activated at all state ports due to the impending cyclone.

Transportation Disruptions

In light of the approaching storm, railway officials have canceled numerous train services, with reports indicating that 66 services have been suspended up to Ellundi. The decision was made to ensure the safety of passengers and minimize disruptions during the storm.

Current Conditions

Heavy rains have already been reported across various regions of Andhra Pradesh, leading to flooding in low-lying areas. Joint districts such as Chittoor, Anantapur, Krishna, Prakasam, and Uttarandhra are particularly affected, with ponds and streams overflowing their banks and inundating villages.

Conclusion

As Cyclone Dana draws near, residents of the Telugu states are urged to remain vigilant and stay updated on weather advisories. The situation is dynamic, and local authorities are taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety during this severe weather event.
