Several private hospitals affiliated with the NTR Vaidya Seva Network have issued a warning to limit healthcare services to emergency care only for patients enrolled in the scheme starting August 15 in the state. They have appealed to the state government to settle their outstanding payments. The Andhra Pradesh Speciality Hospitals Association, in a statement released on Wednesday, expressed concerns about the financial challenges the hospitals are currently facing. They have highlighted their inability to even afford basic medical supplies due to exhausted financial resources, including loans and overdraft facilities. Despite their intention to continue offering healthcare services without causing disruptions to patients or the government, they stress the urgent need for the state government to clear their long-overdue payments.

The doctors mentioned that they had received their dues up until September 2023, but the outstanding amount has now reached 1,750 crore by May 2024. Despite assurances from the previous government to provide relief, the new government has only recently cleared a fraction of the owed amount. The doctors emphasized their dedication to serving patients under the scheme but expressed frustration at facing unwarranted challenges and delays in receiving payment.

In addition to the financial issues, junior doctors have been protesting for the second consecutive day, advocating for the implementation of the Central Protection Act in the state. This comes in the wake of a tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where medical students have been staging protests following the rape and murder of a postgraduate student on August 9. As part of their protest, the students have boycotted non-emergency medical services and have received support from senior medical professionals across both public and private sectors.

Furthermore, an altercation occurred at Kurnool Medical College involving an attendant who allegedly mistreated a postgraduate student while she was trying to assist a female doctor facing abuse. The medical students have reported the incident to local authorities, seeking appropriate action against the attendant.
