The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) has launched a comprehensive cleanliness drive under the Swachhata Special Campaign 4.0, aimed at promoting cleanliness and addressing outstanding issues from October 2 to October 31. This campaign is part of a larger initiative to raise awareness about cleanliness, streamline office operations, and ensure proper record-keeping, with a particular focus on field operations.

Under the headquarters of ENC, various units and establishments are engaging in numerous activities designed to enhance cleanliness and environmental sustainability. These include special drives to clean hard-to-reach areas, the disposal of discarded vehicles and equipment, and the efficient management of e-waste. Additionally, the campaign is raising awareness about the importance of recycling and waste management in the face of rapid infrastructure development and industrial growth in Visakhapatnam.

Naval personnel, defense civilians, and the local population are all being sensitized to the importance of sustainable waste management through these activities. The Eastern Naval Command is actively fostering collaboration between the naval community and local residents, encouraging a joint effort to create a cleaner, greener environment.

A statement from the ENC highlighted that these eco-friendly initiatives aim to instill an environmentally respectful attitude, contributing to a healthier and cleaner tomorrow. By working together, the ENC hopes to set an example of environmental responsibility that resonates both within the Navy and throughout the surrounding community.

Ten years ago, the establishment of the waste to wealth center aimed to extract value from waste and enhance sanitation. Waste management facilities were erected in all 11 mandal centers within the agency with a total investment of 255 lakh. Regrettably, these centers have not been operational due to the inaction of the authorities. Initially launched under the National Employment Guarantee Scheme, the centers were meant to streamline garbage collection, store both wet and dry waste, produce organic fertilizers, and sell plastic bottles for profit. Each mandal center features a substantial shed costing 5 lakh, specifically designed to manage various waste types. K. Govinda Rao, the district honorary president of the Andhra Pradesh Tribal Association 5th Schedule Sadhana Committee, criticized the previous YSRC government for neglecting the waste to wealth centers established during the tenure of the previous TD government, citing unpaid salaries for employees.
