Floods in Telugu States: Reservoirs Overflow as Rains Pour Down

The recent heavy rains sweeping through the upper regions have led to significant flooding in the Telugu states, causing all major projects to reach full capacity. As the Godavari River swells, the region is experiencing a deluge that is raising water levels in key reservoirs and prompting authorities to issue warnings to residents in lower areas.

Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir Overflow

Nagarjuna Sagar has once again become a focal point of concern, with an impressive inflow of 74,000 cusecs entering the reservoir. The current water level has reached 590 feet, nearing the project’s full capacity. Officials are advising those in lower-lying areas to remain vigilant, as the risks of flooding increase. Despite the dangers, the heavy flow of water has attracted many tourists who wish to witness the magnificent sight.

Srisailam Reservoir Update

The Srisailam reservoir continues to experience flooding, with a total inflow recorded at 1,29,562 cusecs, while outflows are at 95,699 cusecs. Currently, the water level is at 885 feet, with storage capacity standing at 213.4 TMC. The hydropower stations on both banks of the Srisailam project are operating at full capacity, contributing to power generation amidst the crisis.

Jurala and Tungabhadra Projects

The Jurala project is also feeling the effects of the torrential rains, with inflow levels climbing to 75,000 cusecs. In total, the project is currently releasing 85,356 cusecs of water downstream. Meanwhile, the Tungabhadra reservoir is experiencing significant inflow, with approximately 60,000 cubic meters of water being released through eight gates. The Sunkesula barrage in Kurnool district is under scrutiny as officials have raised 22 spillway gates to release 93,324 cusecs of water downstream, indicating the severity of the situation.

Krishnamma River Rising

The Krishnamma River is also swelling, with 84,297 cusecs of water coming from upstream at the Prakasam barrage. The water level has surged to 12 feet, leading to the release of 6,547 cusecs to the right and left canals. Authorities remain on alert, as predictions suggest that the flooding may worsen.

Overall, the floods resulting from heavy rains in the upper states have transformed the reservoirs across the Telugu states into overflowing projects. While the natural spectacle draws tourists, local authorities emphasize the importance of preparedness and safety for residents in the affected areas.

Amaravati, September 9: Heavy rains have been wreaking havoc in the Telugu states over the past few days, leading to widespread flooding and chaos in several areas. In response to the escalating situation, the government has declared holidays for schools in certain districts today, September 9. This decision comes as a measure to ensure the safety of students residing in flood-affected regions.

The affected districts where school holidays have been announced include Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitaramaraj, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR (rehabilitation centers & schools in flooded areas), and Bapatla. The onset of heavy rains, attributed to the influence of the low-pressure system associated with Dhoni in the Bay of Bengal, has prompted the Meteorological Department to issue warnings of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall for today and tomorrow.

Already, the impact of the torrential rains has led to floods in various districts, disrupting public life and necessitating relief efforts by the government. Overflowing rivers and inundated areas have compounded traffic problems, prompting officials to advise residents in high-intensity rainfall zones to venture outdoors only in case of emergencies.

In Konaseema district, fears of flooding loom large among the residents, despite the withdrawal of danger alerts at the Dhavaleshwaram barrage in East Godavari district. With 9 lakh cusecs of floodwater being discharged into the sea, apprehension grips the populace regarding the potential flood pathways. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is actively involved in relocating individuals to safer locations, particularly in the Gurajapulanka Pallamvaripalem area of Konaseema district, severely impacted by the floods. Meanwhile, Alluri district continues to experience copious rainfall, leading to traffic disruptions at multiple points along overflowing rivers.

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc on the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Millions of people have been displaced, with farmers facing irreparable damage to their crops and livelihoods. Tragically, thousands of families have lost their lives due to the devastating water damage caused by the relentless downpour.

The situation has escalated to a state of emergency, with losses amounting to thousands of crores in both states. In Vijayawada, where floodwaters have submerged entire neighborhoods, there are no tears left to shed, only cries of hunger echoing through the streets.

As the beleaguered residents grapple with the aftermath of the disaster, the government has swiftly mobilized relief efforts to provide aid to those in need. However, the challenges continue to mount as the Meteorological Department issues a dire warning of a low-pressure system forming in the northwest Bay of Bengal.

According to forecasts by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this weather anomaly is expected to bring light to moderate rains to several districts in the region. Areas such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, and others are bracing for the impact of the impending storm.

Meanwhile, the rising flow of the Godavari River poses a new threat, with floodwaters reaching alarming levels. Residents living along the riverbanks are urged to remain vigilant and avoid any attempts to cross the swelling rivers and streams.

In the face of this unfolding crisis, it is crucial for authorities and communities to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected by the disaster.

The post The Intriguing Connection Between Amavasya, Full Moon Days, and Floods Explained appeared first on Vizag One.

]]>
On Amavasya and Full Moon days, the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth creates a unique gravitational pull that affects various natural phenomena. In the city of Bejawada, which is currently grappling with unprecedented rains and floods, the looming presence of Amavasya adds an additional layer of concern. The interplay between floods and the lunar cycle has sparked curiosity among residents and experts alike.

During Amavasya, the gravitational forces of the Sun and Moon on Earth intensify, causing sea levels to rise significantly. On such occasions, the sea waves can surge up to a meter higher than usual, exacerbating flood risks in coastal areas. The city of Vijayawada, already inundated with floodwaters, faces a critical challenge during Amavasya as the high tide impedes the outflow of excess water through the Krishna River into the sea.

Experts emphasize that the impact of Amavasya on floods lies in the obstruction of floodwaters reaching the sea during this lunar phase. The convergence of floodwaters at the Prakasam barrage, releasing over 11.39 lakh cusecs of water, further complicates the situation. As the floodwaters struggle to dissipate into the ocean near Hamsala Devi, the effects of the new moon hinder their natural flow, prolonging the inundation risks for Vijayawada.

In light of these challenges, questions arise about the duration of this phenomenon and the insights offered by scientific perspectives. NIO Regional Director VVSS Sharma highlights the significance of high tides in mitigating floodwaters before and after Amavasya. The gravitational synergy of the celestial bodies during new moon and full moon phases underscores the intricate relationship between lunar alignments and natural phenomena, underscoring the need for proactive flood management strategies.
