]]> Google is enhancing its commitment to India by introducing advanced AI tools aimed at overcoming language barriers and improving agricultural techniques, as stated by a senior official of the company. Abhishek Bapna, the director of product management at Google DeepMind, emphasized the significance of addressing language obstacles in India’s economic progress. The technology behemoth has unveiled Google Gemini (previously Bard), an AI chatbot supporting over 40 global languages, including nine Indian languages. Bapna, speaking during a brief visit to IIM Calcutta, mentioned that Google’s continuous focus is on enhancing language accuracy and extending support to more Indian languages in the future. Presently, the chatbot caters to nine Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Bapna highlighted the intricate challenges posed by India’s multilingual environment for AI models, which need to accurately interpret and utilize the relevant dictionaries to provide precise responses. In a move to empower developers in India, Google is broadening Project Vaani in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), offering developers access to over 14,000 hours of speech data in 58 languages from 80,000 speakers across 80 districts. Additionally, Google has introduced IndicGenBench tailored for Indian languages, aimed at evaluating and refining language models for more effective use in India.
