Cyclone Likely to Form Over South Bay of Bengal
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about a severe depression in the South Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a severe cyclone within the next 24 hours. Currently, the depression is located about 980 km from Puducherry and 1050 km from Chennai. According to IMD, the cyclone will continue to strengthen and may cause heavy rainfall across the southern and northern coasts in the coming days.

The cyclone’s effect will lead to moderate to heavy rainfall in coastal regions from November 26 to 29. Meteorological officials have warned that from November 28 to 30, the storm will likely move northwest towards the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coast, causing widespread rains, especially in coastal districts.

Rain and Gusty Winds Expected
The weather forecast indicates significant rainfall in the South Coast and Rayalaseema region from November 26 to 28. Coastal areas such as Nellore, Prakasam, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Kakinada, and Anakapalli will experience heavy rainfall between November 28 and 29. The cyclone could also bring gusty winds reaching speeds of 45 to 55 km per hour along the coast. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to the rough conditions. Ports in the coastal areas have already issued warnings about the storm.

Impact on Agriculture and Public Safety
In light of the cyclone’s potential impact, officials from the Agriculture Department have urged farmers in South Coastal Andhra to remain vigilant. They recommended avoiding the cutting of crops and advised taking preventive measures to protect already harvested crops from the heavy rains and gusty winds. The impact is expected to be more severe in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts.

PM Modi’s Visit to Andhra Pradesh Cancelled
Due to the impending cyclone, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has announced the cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Visakhapatnam on November 29. Modi was set to lay the foundation stone for the NTPC Green Hydrogen Hub and dedicate several railway projects and national highways. The PM’s visit also included a rally and public meeting at the Andhra University Engineering College ground, but these plans have now been halted in light of the cyclone threat.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert regarding Cyclone Dana, as named by Qatar, which may form over the east-central Bay of Bengal on October 23. According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, the system is expected to move in a north-westward direction and may reach the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha and West Bengal coasts by the morning of October 24.

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra stated that Cyclone Dana exhibits characteristics of a multi-cyclonic model, which could mean multiple storm systems contributing to its strength. This development comes as Peninsular India is already experiencing consistent rainfall in various regions, including parts of Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, interior and coastal Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Over the next two to four days, weather conditions may worsen with the intensification of rainfall across these regions. IMD has also predicted thunderstorms with lightning in isolated places across north and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema from Monday through Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from Thursday to Saturday.

The IMD urges residents and authorities in vulnerable coastal areas to be on high alert, as the cyclone could potentially cause disruptions and severe weather conditions along the Odisha and West Bengal coastlines. Preparedness and timely action are critical as Cyclone Dana continues to develop.
