The Prakasam Barrage in Bejawada has transformed into a magical spectacle, drawing in large crowds to witness what locals are calling an extraordinary “water scene.” With holiday cheer in the air, residents and visitors alike are gathering to behold the sight of the Krishnamma stream leaping over the barrage gates, illuminated by a dazzling array of lights.

The scene is nothing short of surreal—darkness all around, yet a barrage of shimmering lights dance over the waters, creating a mesmerizing contrast. As the gates open and water is released, Krishnamma flows with force and grace, jumping over the gates and racing toward the sea. This awe-inspiring sight has become a must-see event for Bejawada’s people.

The Prakasam Barrage, the final project on the Krishna River, is currently receiving a heavy influx of floodwaters. Authorities have been diligently lifting the barrage’s 70 gates since Saturday evening to manage the incoming floodwaters. Out of the 70 gates, 60 have been raised by three feet, while 10 are elevated by two feet to ensure the steady release of water into the sea.

As of now, the barrage is seeing an inflow of 1 lakh 78 thousand cusecs, with an outflow of 1 lakh 38 thousand cusecs. This powerful flow of water, combined with the visual spectacle of lights, has attracted thousands of Bejawada’s residents to witness Krishnamma’s dramatic journey.

The breathtaking visuals are a result of water flowing from the Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, and Pulichintala projects, which have all contributed to the floodwaters reaching Prakasam Barrage. Authorities have warned people in downstream areas, especially those living in the Lankan villages, to remain vigilant and cautious during this time of water release.

Despite the warnings, the atmosphere at the barrage is one of excitement and awe. Locals describe Krishnamma’s flow as “Birabira paravals,” marveling at the sight of water rushing through the gates under the glowing lights. For many, this water scene has become the highlight of the weekend, providing both entertainment and a reminder of nature’s power.

The Prakasam Barrage, a symbol of Bejawada’s resilience and connection to the Krishna River, continues to stand strong amidst the floodwaters. As the holiday continues, people are expected to flock in even larger numbers to witness the water spectacle that has captivated the city.

The flood-affected areas are witnessing heartbreaking scenes as millions of acres of crops have been damaged, and thousands of farmers have suffered losses. The situation is dire with casualties reported in various districts, infrastructure damage, and a looming threat of more rain.

The heavy rains in the Telugu states have led to a tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. In Andhra Pradesh, 33 people have lost their lives due to the floods caused by the incessant downpour. The NTR district has been severely affected, with 25 reported deaths, while Guntur and Palnadu districts have also witnessed casualties.

Millions of acres of crops, including horticultural crops, have been flooded and damaged, resulting in significant losses for the agricultural community. The impact on farmers is staggering, with 2,34,000 farmers in the state facing losses. Additionally, the poultry industry has been hit hard, with around 60,000 chickens perishing in the floodwaters.

The floodwaters have also claimed the lives of 275 cattle, damaged 22 sub railway stations, and left 3,973 kilometers of roads in disarray. Ponds, canals, and various infrastructure have been flooded, exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected population.

As the rescue and relief efforts intensify, 45,369 people are seeking shelter in 214 relief camps across the state. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, along with helicopters and boats, are working tirelessly to assist those in need.

The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of more heavy rains in the region, with a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal expected to bring further downpours. An orange alert has been issued for specific districts, highlighting the imminent threat of heavy to very heavy rains and strong winds along the coast.

In a recent update, the state government revealed that the Krishna river is experiencing a significant flow of water, adding to the challenges posed by the ongoing weather conditions. The situation remains critical, and the authorities are on high alert to mitigate the impact of the relentless rains and floods.

The Intriguing Connection Between Amavasya, Full Moon Days, and Floods Explained https://www.vizagone.com/news/the-intriguing-connection-between-amavasya-full-moon-days-and-floods-explained/ https://www.vizagone.com/news/the-intriguing-connection-between-amavasya-full-moon-days-and-floods-explained/#respond Tue, 03 Sep 2024 00:15:20 +0000 https://www.vizagone.com/?p=26382 Explore the intricate nexus between Amavasya, Full Moon days, and flood dynamics as Bejawada navigates the complexities of lunar influences on natural calamities.

On Amavasya and Full Moon days, the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth creates a unique gravitational pull that affects various natural phenomena. In the city of Bejawada, which is currently grappling with unprecedented rains and floods, the looming presence of Amavasya adds an additional layer of concern. The interplay between floods and the lunar cycle has sparked curiosity among residents and experts alike.

During Amavasya, the gravitational forces of the Sun and Moon on Earth intensify, causing sea levels to rise significantly. On such occasions, the sea waves can surge up to a meter higher than usual, exacerbating flood risks in coastal areas. The city of Vijayawada, already inundated with floodwaters, faces a critical challenge during Amavasya as the high tide impedes the outflow of excess water through the Krishna River into the sea.

Experts emphasize that the impact of Amavasya on floods lies in the obstruction of floodwaters reaching the sea during this lunar phase. The convergence of floodwaters at the Prakasam barrage, releasing over 11.39 lakh cusecs of water, further complicates the situation. As the floodwaters struggle to dissipate into the ocean near Hamsala Devi, the effects of the new moon hinder their natural flow, prolonging the inundation risks for Vijayawada.

In light of these challenges, questions arise about the duration of this phenomenon and the insights offered by scientific perspectives. NIO Regional Director VVSS Sharma highlights the significance of high tides in mitigating floodwaters before and after Amavasya. The gravitational synergy of the celestial bodies during new moon and full moon phases underscores the intricate relationship between lunar alignments and natural phenomena, underscoring the need for proactive flood management strategies.

The flood warning remains in effect for Prakasam Barrage as close to three lakh cusecs of water is anticipated to be released downstream from the barrage into the sea before Thursday morning. By 6 p.m., 1.37 lakh cusecs of water had already been discharged from the barrage, with the potential for this amount to escalate to three lakh cusecs within a short period. Initially, 50 gates were opened followed by an additional 20 gates. Authorities mentioned that about 13.477 cusecs of water were directed to the canals for agricultural purposes. Krishna river conservator Krishna Rao issued the flood alert at Prakasam Barrage and urged the implementation of preventive measures to mitigate risks along the river’s path both upstream and downstream of the barrage. Rao stated, “We are witnessing a substantial influx of water from the upstream projects into the Krishna river. We foresee a discharge of nearly 3 lakh cusecs from the Barrage by tonight.” The weather forecast predicts rainfall over the next five days in specific areas of north-coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, south-coastal AP, and Rayalaseema. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected.
