Despite facing life’s challenges, an empowered group of 84 Indian para-athletes, marking the largest assembly in the nation’s history, blending both youthful vigor and seasoned experience, eagerly anticipates a potential surge in gold medals as the Paralympic Games kick off this Wednesday. In the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, India clinched a remarkable 19 medals, including five gold, securing a 24th-place finish overall. Fast forward three years, the country’s objective now exceeds 25 medals with a strong emphasis on double-digit gold achievements.

The driving force behind this ambition stems from the sheer size of the contingent and their outstanding performances over the past year. Notably, India achieved a groundbreaking feat at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games last year, amassing a record-breaking 111 medals, including 29 golds. Subsequently, the nation showcased unprecedented success at the World Para Athletics Championships in May, clinching 17 medals, including six golds, culminating in a commendable sixth-place standing in the overall rankings.

Many of the medalists from Hangzhou have transitioned to the current Paralympic squad, among them renowned athletes such as Sumit Antil (F64), the world record-holding javelin thrower, and Avani Lekhara (10m Air Rifle Standing SH1), a sharpshooter. Both are set to defend their gold medals from Tokyo. The Paralympic Games, not only a testament to athletic prowess but also to human resilience, categorize athletes based on similar functional capabilities relating to movement, coordination, and balance, determining their respective classifications based on the “degree and nature of their eligible impairments.”

Historically, India’s paraathletics team has been instrumental in securing medals, and this trend is anticipated to continue with a substantial representation of 38 athletes poised to make significant contributions in the upcoming games.
