The Visakhapatnam Society for Animal Protection and Care (VSAPC) has become a beacon of hope for thousands of animals in need across India. Established by animal welfare advocate Pradeep Kumar Nath, VSAPC shelters more than 1,000 rescued animals, many of whom have faced abandonment, illness, or injury. The organization’s founder, Nath, is deeply committed to creating safe, nurturing spaces for these animals and annually dedicates ₹3 crore to their care, funded by donations from animal lovers worldwide.

Originally opened in Ozone Valley, Madhurawada, the VSAPC has expanded to include branches in K. Kotapadu and Baligattam at Narsipatnam in Anakapalli district. “We used to care for over 2,500 animals, but after the pandemic, we streamlined operations to prioritize treatment and immediate adoption,” shared Nath. The VSAPC now focuses on rehabilitating animals swiftly and encouraging adoption to ensure their shelters can accommodate those most in need.

Nath’s journey into animal advocacy began long ago, catalyzed by a troubling event in the late 1990s when the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) attempted to cull stray animals. Nath successfully challenged this plan in the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1997, leading to the establishment of an animal birth control program, including sterilization and anti-rabies vaccination for stray dogs.

VSAPC’s shelters provide sanctuary for a wide variety of species, from dogs, cats, and cows to parrots, emus, ducks, rabbits, and even the endangered Olive Ridley turtles along Visakhapatnam’s beaches. Equipped with a dedicated hospital, including two air-conditioned operating theaters, VSAPC ensures every animal receives high-quality medical care. The organization’s sustainable initiatives also include a biogas plant and the planting of over 60,000 fruit-bearing trees.

The VSAPC’s work has not gone unnoticed, with Nath receiving international recognition for his unflagging dedication to animal welfare. His compassion and leadership continue to make a meaningful difference, creating a legacy of kindness and responsible stewardship toward all living beings.
