The Prakasam Barrage in Bejawada has transformed into a magical spectacle, drawing in large crowds to witness what locals are calling an extraordinary “water scene.” With holiday cheer in the air, residents and visitors alike are gathering to behold the sight of the Krishnamma stream leaping over the barrage gates, illuminated by a dazzling array of lights.

The scene is nothing short of surreal—darkness all around, yet a barrage of shimmering lights dance over the waters, creating a mesmerizing contrast. As the gates open and water is released, Krishnamma flows with force and grace, jumping over the gates and racing toward the sea. This awe-inspiring sight has become a must-see event for Bejawada’s people.

The Prakasam Barrage, the final project on the Krishna River, is currently receiving a heavy influx of floodwaters. Authorities have been diligently lifting the barrage’s 70 gates since Saturday evening to manage the incoming floodwaters. Out of the 70 gates, 60 have been raised by three feet, while 10 are elevated by two feet to ensure the steady release of water into the sea.

As of now, the barrage is seeing an inflow of 1 lakh 78 thousand cusecs, with an outflow of 1 lakh 38 thousand cusecs. This powerful flow of water, combined with the visual spectacle of lights, has attracted thousands of Bejawada’s residents to witness Krishnamma’s dramatic journey.

The breathtaking visuals are a result of water flowing from the Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, and Pulichintala projects, which have all contributed to the floodwaters reaching Prakasam Barrage. Authorities have warned people in downstream areas, especially those living in the Lankan villages, to remain vigilant and cautious during this time of water release.

Despite the warnings, the atmosphere at the barrage is one of excitement and awe. Locals describe Krishnamma’s flow as “Birabira paravals,” marveling at the sight of water rushing through the gates under the glowing lights. For many, this water scene has become the highlight of the weekend, providing both entertainment and a reminder of nature’s power.

The Prakasam Barrage, a symbol of Bejawada’s resilience and connection to the Krishna River, continues to stand strong amidst the floodwaters. As the holiday continues, people are expected to flock in even larger numbers to witness the water spectacle that has captivated the city.

Floods in Telugu States: Reservoirs Overflow as Rains Pour Down

The recent heavy rains sweeping through the upper regions have led to significant flooding in the Telugu states, causing all major projects to reach full capacity. As the Godavari River swells, the region is experiencing a deluge that is raising water levels in key reservoirs and prompting authorities to issue warnings to residents in lower areas.

Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir Overflow

Nagarjuna Sagar has once again become a focal point of concern, with an impressive inflow of 74,000 cusecs entering the reservoir. The current water level has reached 590 feet, nearing the project’s full capacity. Officials are advising those in lower-lying areas to remain vigilant, as the risks of flooding increase. Despite the dangers, the heavy flow of water has attracted many tourists who wish to witness the magnificent sight.

Srisailam Reservoir Update

The Srisailam reservoir continues to experience flooding, with a total inflow recorded at 1,29,562 cusecs, while outflows are at 95,699 cusecs. Currently, the water level is at 885 feet, with storage capacity standing at 213.4 TMC. The hydropower stations on both banks of the Srisailam project are operating at full capacity, contributing to power generation amidst the crisis.

Jurala and Tungabhadra Projects

The Jurala project is also feeling the effects of the torrential rains, with inflow levels climbing to 75,000 cusecs. In total, the project is currently releasing 85,356 cusecs of water downstream. Meanwhile, the Tungabhadra reservoir is experiencing significant inflow, with approximately 60,000 cubic meters of water being released through eight gates. The Sunkesula barrage in Kurnool district is under scrutiny as officials have raised 22 spillway gates to release 93,324 cusecs of water downstream, indicating the severity of the situation.

Krishnamma River Rising

The Krishnamma River is also swelling, with 84,297 cusecs of water coming from upstream at the Prakasam barrage. The water level has surged to 12 feet, leading to the release of 6,547 cusecs to the right and left canals. Authorities remain on alert, as predictions suggest that the flooding may worsen.

Overall, the floods resulting from heavy rains in the upper states have transformed the reservoirs across the Telugu states into overflowing projects. While the natural spectacle draws tourists, local authorities emphasize the importance of preparedness and safety for residents in the affected areas.

The removal of boats near Prakasam Barrage has become a challenging endeavor for officials. Despite three different attempts, disappointment looms as the boats must be extracted without causing any harm to the barrage. Complicating matters further, the rising flood flow poses a hindrance to the ongoing operations.

Initially, Plan-A involved hoisting the boats using two massive cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes, but the boats remained immovable, leading to the failure of this plan. Subsequently, Plan-B saw the deployment of air balloons to lift the sunken boats; however, this strategy also faltered due to the excessive weight of the vessels and decreasing water levels.

In a last-ditch effort, officials called upon the Abbulu team from Kakinada, known for their expertise in the Kachulur boat accident, to assist in the removal. Under Plan-C, seven heavy boats were deployed, and iron ropes were fastened to the sunken boats, attempting to tow them to the shore. Although a boat was successfully moved a short distance, the overall endeavor failed to achieve the desired outcome.

Despite vigorous attempts lasting five days to bring the boats ashore using ropes and boats, all three plans—Plan-A, Plan-B, and Plan-C—proved unsuccessful. Consequently, the rescue team temporarily halted operations, regrouping to devise a new approach for the boat extraction process, leaving the success and duration of the subsequent efforts shrouded in uncertainty.

The Andhra Pradesh government is devising plans to introduce seaplanes as a key component of its strategy to boost tourism. Leading the charge on this initiative is the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL). Drawing inspiration from the successful seaplane service operating on Gujarat’s Sabarmati River, the AP government has commissioned senior officials from various departments such as tourism, revenue, forest, fisheries, and water resources to undertake an initial study.

Under the supervision of Amrit Kumar, the project engineer at Orvakal Airport, these officials conducted an examination of the Krishna River at Srisailam, collecting essential data for the seaplane project. The inspection team journeyed from the SLBC tunnel to the upstream Srisailam reservoir to evaluate the project’s feasibility. Their assessment revealed that the area is well-suited for establishing an aerodrome to facilitate seaplane landings.

In the planning stages of the water-based aerodrome, officials are committed to ensuring minimal disruption to the livelihoods of local fishermen who rely on the reservoir for fishing activities. A comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently in progress, focusing on the viability of the aerodrome on Srisailam reservoir water and conducting a thorough assessment of the ground conditions before proceeding further.

Additionally, plans are in place to conduct surveys at Prakasam Barrage and Nagarjuna Sagar. The state government aims to introduce seaplanes starting from Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, establishing a connection to Nagarjuna Sagar via the downstream flow of the Krishna River from Srisailam. Future tourism packages are being considered to offer seaplane services along this river route. Exploring the potential for aerodromes at strategic locations like Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, and Prakasam Barrage is expected to significantly boost tourism revenue.

Chandramouli Reddy, the divisional manager of the Tourism Department, has confirmed the completion of the joint inspection. The state government is set to proceed with the DPR based on the recommendations put forth by the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited.

The attempt to remove the heavy boats lodged in the Prakasam Barrage has proven to be a daunting task for authorities and experts alike. Despite exhaustive efforts lasting approximately 5 hours, the boats remained immobile, leading to a halt in operations on Tuesday evening. The predicament began when five boats collided with the barrage gates during a recent heavy flood, with one vessel being swept away by the force of the water.

The intricate process of dislodging the boats has evolved into a formidable challenge, with initial strategies falling short of success. Even the utilization of heavy cranes failed to budge the colossal boats obstructing the gates, each weighing over 20 tons and entangled in a complex web of sand and debris. Despite concerted attempts, including employing two robust cranes capable of lifting substantial weights, the boats remained firmly lodged in place.

As officials transitioned to contingency plans, the focus shifted to Plan B. Arrangements were made to deploy diving teams from Visakhapatnam to dismantle the boats using heavy cutters. The teams would painstakingly disassemble the vessels, enabling their removal either downstream or with the assistance of cranes. Additionally, the deployment of air balloons capable of lifting significant loads was considered to aid in the extraction process.

Despite the tireless efforts of irrigation officials and experts, the operation to free the trapped boats faced ongoing challenges. The initiative involved securing the overturned boats with wires, restoring their orientation, and navigating them through the turbulent flood currents. However, the relentless flow of water, combined with the sheer mass of the boats, thwarted these endeavors.

The saga of the stranded boats at Prakasam Barrage underscores the resilience and adaptability required by those entrusted with resolving such intricate dilemmas. The collaboration of diverse teams and the exploration of innovative solutions reflect the determination to overcome formidable obstacles in the pursuit of a successful resolution.
