Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion, showcased his prowess as he advanced into the men’s javelin throw final of the Olympic Games with an outstanding performance of 89.34m on his initial attempt during the qualification round. Similar to his impressive showing in the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers, the 26-year-old surpassed the automatic qualifying distance of 84m with his first throw, securing the lead in Group B. This remarkable achievement, the second best of his career, dispelled any doubts about Chopra’s fitness following his disclosure of battling an adductor niggle prior to the Games. His personal record stands at 89.94m, achieved in 2022.

Chopra, the reigning world champion, dominated the combined qualification round of Group A and B with his exceptional throw. Anderson Peters of Grenada, a two-time world champion, secured the second spot in Group B with 88.63m and placed second overall. Julian Weber of Germany, winner of Group A with 87.76m, claimed the third overall position. Additionally, Nadeem of Pakistan, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, secured his spot in the finals by throwing 86.59m in Group B.

Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic, the silver medallist in the Tokyo Olympics and the only athlete to defeat Chopra this year in the Doha Diamond League, stood seventh overall with a throw of 85.63m in the first round. Unfortunately, Kishore Jena from India failed to qualify for the 12-man final after a disappointing throw of 80.73m, finishing ninth in Group A and 18th overall. Those who achieved a throw of 84m or more, or the top 12 performers from the combined Groups A and B, will progress to the final. Notably, nine athletes surpassed the automatic final round qualification distance, underscoring the competitive nature of the event.

Neeraj Chopra, a prominent figure in Indian athletics known for his numerous achievements, is set to make history once again at his second Olympics as he aims for another remarkable performance in the javelin event. Despite facing challenges due to a persistent adductor injury throughout the season, Chopra will kick off his pursuit on Tuesday with the qualifying round, with high hopes of advancing to the finals scheduled for August 8.

If Chopra secures a top spot on the podium, he will become only the fifth athlete in Olympic history to successfully defend his title and the first Indian to claim two gold medals in an individual event at the prestigious multi-sport event. Joining the ranks of iconic athletes such as Eric Lemming (Sweden; 1908 and 1912), Jonni Myyra (Finland; 1920 and 1924), Jan Zelezny (Czech Republic; 1992, 1996, and 2000), and Andreas Thorkildsen (Norway; 2004 and 2008), who have achieved this feat in the men’s javelin competition.

Despite limited participation in competitions this year, the 26-year-old reigning world champion remains in peak form in a season where his international rivals have not performed exceptionally well. Following a notable performance in the Doha Diamond League in May, where he threw a season’s best of 88.36m, Chopra withdrew from the Ostrava Golden Spike event on May 28 as a precautionary measure after experiencing discomfort in his adductor muscles.

Making a triumphant return to form, Chopra claimed victory at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on June 10 with a throw of 85.97m, showcasing his exceptional talent and determination. Subsequently, he decided to skip the Paris Diamond League on July 7, clarifying that the event was not part of his competitive schedule for the year. Addressing concerns about his fitness, Chopra’s coach reassured that his adductor issues have been resolved, and he is currently undergoing intensive training to prepare for the upcoming challenges.

In a thrilling match at the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian men’s hockey team showcased their resilience as they triumphed over Great Britain in a nail-biting shoot-out, securing a spot in the semifinals and edging closer to their second consecutive Olympic medal.

The game took a dramatic turn when India was reduced to 10 men following Amit Rohidas’ red card for an altercation with a Great Britain player. Despite the setback, the bronze medallist from the previous Olympics, P. R. Sreejesh, delivered a stellar performance, holding off the relentless attacks from Great Britain and keeping the score tied at 1-1 during regulation time.

Great Britain’s tactical play, including tight man-to-man marking to prevent India from executing aerial balls, posed a challenge for the Indian team. However, the veterans of the squad, led by the exceptional Sreejesh, managed to weather the storm and escape unscathed.

Sreejesh, the seasoned goalkeeper in his final international tournament, stood firm as a rock in front of the Indian goal, making crucial saves and thwarting Great Britain’s attempts to take the lead. Despite being a player down, India seized the initiative with a goal from Harmanpreet Singh off a penalty corner in the 22nd minute, only to be matched by Great Britain’s Lee Morton’s field effort five minutes later.

The tension escalated as Great Britain pressed forward with numerical superiority, seeking to capitalize on their one-man advantage. However, Sreejesh’s heroics in the shoot-out, where he denied key attempts from Great Britain’s players, ensured India’s victory. The team’s performance was further bolstered by successful conversions from Harmanpreet, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, and Rajkumar Pal.

Reflecting on the match, former captain Manpreet Singh praised Sreejesh’s consistent contributions, emphasizing his pivotal role in securing the win. Head coach Craig Fulton commended the team’s defensive efforts and unity, highlighting Sreejesh’s exceptional display and the collective support among teammates.

The victory not only propels India into the semifinals but also serves as a testament to their determination and teamwork in the face of adversity. As the Indian hockey team continues their pursuit of Olympic glory, the spirit and resilience displayed in this match stand as a defining moment in their journey towards success.

Manika Batra achieved a historic milestone as she became the first Indian table tennis player to advance to the singles prequarterfinals at the Olympic Games after securing a decisive 4-0 victory against the world number 18 and local favorite, Prithika Pavade, on Monday. The 29-year-old Manika displayed dominance throughout the match, clinching a solid 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 win over Prithika, who has her roots in India. This match will be remembered as one of the most remarkable performances by an Indian table tennis player in Olympic history. Manika had previously reached the round of 32 at the Tokyo Olympics and she surpassed that achievement on Monday. “I am pleased with my victory over a French player in Paris. Defeating a higher-ranked opponent was satisfying. I wasn’t aiming to make history by reaching the prequarterfinals, there are more rounds to go, and I will approach each match with my best effort as always,” stated Manika after her victory. Despite the effective tactic of targeting Prithika’s backhand during the match, it was not the initial strategy planned by Manika. Prithika’s family originally hails from Puducherry, but they relocated to France in 2003. Prithika, who is 19 years old, participated in the Tokyo Olympics, exiting in the first round, yet she has shown significant improvement since then, currently holding the 18th position in the world rankings compared to Manika’s 28th rank.
