Indian Coast Guard Rescues 11 Crew Members from Overturned Cargo Vessel in Bay of Bengal

In a bold sea-to-air maneuver, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has effectively saved 11 crew members from a cargo vessel that overturned in the Bay of Bengal early Monday morning. Regrettably, three crew members are still unaccounted for, prompting an ongoing search mission. The entire crew of 14 individuals were of Indian nationality.

The incident revolved around the Mumbai-registered ship, MV ITT Puma, a 75-meter-long vessel transporting general cargo from Kolkata to Port Blair. Rough sea conditions led to the vessel sinking around 90 nautical miles south of Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

Late Sunday evening, the Maritime Search & Rescue Coordination Centre in Chennai received a distress call from the ship. Subsequently, the ICG’s regional headquarters (North East) in Kolkata swiftly dispatched two vessels, Sarang and Amogh, alongside a Dornier aircraft to the scene. By 9:30 pm, a coordinated search operation was initiated by the Indian Coast Guard.

Equipped with cutting-edge night-capable sensors, the Dornier aircraft detected drifting life rafts and sighted red flares signaling distress from the crew in need. Following the aircraft’s guidance, the two ICG ships reached the location where they found two life rafts tethered together, sheltering the survivors.

Despite adverse weather conditions, both the Indian Coast Guard ships and the Dornier aircraft successfully rescued the 11 crew members. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining three missing crew members.

He emphasized that actions will be taken against such individuals to prevent unrest and compared the situation to that of Bangladesh. Furthermore, the North Bengal development minister highlighted the need for maintaining order and preventing any parallels to the situation in Bangladesh, affirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the state from such developments with the support of the local community.

Weather Update: Low-Pressure System and Monsoon Trough in Bay of Bengal and Surrounding Regions

In the region encompassing northwest Bay of Bengal, West Bengal, and nearby parts of Bangladesh, there persists a state of low pressure. The associated surface area reaches heights of up to 4.5 km above the average sea level, with the upwelling basin showing a southwest tilt. This low-pressure system is anticipated to shift in a north-northwest direction over the next 48 hours. Subsequently, a significant depression is predicted to form over the Ganga Basin in West Bengal and Bangladesh, followed by a west-northwest movement over Ganga Basin, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and surrounding vicinities within the subsequent 72 hours.

The monsoon trough has now elongated to 0.9 km above sea level, passing through the focal point of the low-pressure zone covering Phalodi, Banasthali, Shivpuri, Sidhi, Ranchi, and the areas adjacent to northwest Bay of Bengal in West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Moreover, a surface circulation that originated over the southeastern Arabian Sea and the nearby south Kerala coast has shifted towards the south interior of Karnataka and its neighboring regions, reaching heights of up to 5.8 km above sea level, with an southwest inclination. The trough stretching from Konkan to the southeastern Arabian Sea, extending from north interior Karnataka to the Comorin region and the south interior Karnataka, is now overlaid on the surface circulation in the surrounding zones, reaching altitudes of up to 1.5 km above the average sea level.
