The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), in collaboration with the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) of New Delhi, recently held a transformative three-day national capacity-building workshop for zoo conservation biologists from October 24 to 26, 2024. Hosted at IGZP in the scenic city of Visakhapatnam, the event brought together a passionate cohort of conservation biologists from 15 states across India. This workshop aimed at advancing zoo management practices, enhancing animal welfare, and bolstering skills in the field of wildlife captivity management.

Participants engaged in specialized discussions, training sessions, and workshops focused on best practices in wildlife conservation, particularly around captive wildlife management. Key topics included strategies for improving the health, behavior, and welfare of zoo animals, along with innovative approaches to habitat enrichment and ecological sustainability in zoos. Through these sessions, attendees gained insights into strengthening their professional competencies, fostering collaborations, and sharing ideas for more effective conservation strategies.

Highlighting the event was Chief Guest B.M. Diwan Mydeen, IFS, Conservator of Forests, Visakhapatnam, who emphasized the critical role of conservation biologists in shaping the future of India’s zoos and wildlife conservation efforts. His address encouraged participants to apply their new skills and insights within their respective zoos, further enhancing the welfare of animals in captivity and contributing to national biodiversity goals.

The workshop reflects a significant step toward equipping zoo conservation biologists with the tools and knowledge necessary for impactful, sustainable conservation efforts across India. IGZP and CZA’s collaboration underscores their commitment to preserving India’s rich wildlife heritage and strengthening zoo standards across the country.

In a remarkable shift towards wildlife conservation, the residents of Visakhapatnam have changed their approach to dealing with snakes, opting for rescue and relocation rather than killing the reptiles. This growing trend reflects increased awareness of the crucial role snakes play in maintaining the ecosystem and the importance of their conservation.

Snake rescuer Kiran Rokkam, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, highlighted the transformation in attitudes. “In the past, people’s encounters with snakes often resulted in the reptiles being killed due to fear and misconceptions. However, the current trend is that residents are calling professional snake rescuers to safely remove and relocate the snakes. This approach ensures the safety of both humans and the reptiles while contributing to ecological balance.”

Animal lovers and environmentalists see this development as a significant step towards peaceful coexistence with nature. Snakes play a vital role in controlling pest populations, and their presence indicates a healthy environment. By choosing to relocate snakes rather than harm them, Visakhapatnam’s residents are actively participating in wildlife conservation efforts.

A local MRO office employee, who wished to remain anonymous, shared a recent snake encounter at their office in Seethammadhara. “We called the snake rescue team, and they promptly arrived to remove the reptile, although many of our colleagues were initially inclined to kill it.” This incident is just one of many that showcase the city’s growing awareness of the importance of protecting snakes.

Kiran Rokkam further disclosed that he rescues four to five snakes within city limits each month. “I’ve rescued pythons and cobras, including a cobra from the collector’s bungalow,” he said, adding that snakes are often found in various parts of the city as they search for food like rats and lizards.

This new approach in Visakhapatnam demonstrates how education and awareness can lead to harmonious coexistence with wildlife. The city’s residents are setting a positive example by promoting conservation and ensuring that these essential creatures are preserved.
